3rds take COP26

A group of our 3rds (S2s) embarked on a trip to the Glasgow Science Centre to attend COP26. We sat down with them to hear their thoughts on the event...

What did you learn at Cop 26?

We learnt what is actually being dealt with, how it’s being dealt with and when it’s going to be dealt with. We talked about the solutions and what we can do to help.

We also learnt about how the different renewable fuels are used. It wasn’t really about looking backwards, it was more forward looking. We had to vote on which type of renewables we would want to use in the future and what we thought was best for Scotland. The winner was offshore wind.

We also learnt what needs to be prioritised and what isn’t and were given a prioritising tasks by Scottish Power, who were running the event for young people.

We had to decide what top 3 things were the most important and prioritised them to reduce climate change. The one that came out on top was improving public transport. Good news, from 2022 everyone under the age of 22 will get free public transport!

How has it inspired you all?

We were very inspired. Being there meant that we felt more like we were doing something and we felt empowered, like we were part of the decision making process.

There was a lot of energy, positive energy, from being together and discussing it all. The hour and a half that we were there felt like everything was back to normal, besides the masks. If it had been an online event, it wouldn’t have been the same, we needed to be in the room together. It was a really good experience. We did a lot of collaborating and thinking about the future and working together.

Do you think you will change what you are doing day to day because of the event?

Yes. It helped me see what decisions have to be made in everyday life. We had a discussion about how sustainable an electric car is. What we’re learning is that every action that we take has an environmental impact, and it’s about minimising them. I’m trying to convince my parents to buy an electric car.

They were also talking about jobs of the future and it was inspiring. One of them was engineering.
