Accie children’s story raises funds for charity

Edinburgh Academy alumnus Andy Black (EA 1952–62) discovered a draft of a bedtime story that he wrote for his children. Now he is resurrecting the forgotten tale to raise money for the charity that helped him recover following a stroke.

Hughs hiccups Book coverAs the world entered a series of lockdowns in March, time allowed for people to unlock talents, memories, and ideas that may have been forgotten or previously not had the time to explore. This was the case for Accie Andy Black, who re-discovered the story Hugh’s Hiccups that he had written and illustrated for his children in the 1980s.

The book follows the story of a dragon who gets the hiccups as the result of a prank played on him by his uncle. The six chapters, accompanied by Andy’s amazing drawings, take the reader on the journey of how Hugh cures his hiccups through various stages. Some of the drawings and ideas may look a little familiar to some Accies!

Andy sadly suffered from a stroke in 2014 and is using the publication of Hugh’s Hiccups to raise funds for the charity Bristol After Stroke, which supported him during his recovery.

Bristol After Stroke were extremely helpful and influential in Andy’s recovery and he is now more or less independent as a result of their help in supporting his successful recovery programme.

Andy is delighted to announce that he sent £1000 to Bristol After Stroke on New Year’s Day, the proceeds from the sales of Hugh’s Hiccups.

“The main thing for me is to raise money for the charity, and I would love to sell copies to friends and family overseas too.”

If you would like to buy a copy for £6.50, please email: hallensue@mac.com. To find out more about Bristol After Stroke, visit: www.bristolafterstroke.org.uk
