Vinit is dually qualified in medicine and law. He graduated in medicine from Edinburgh University in 1988 and completed his training to become a General Practitioner in 1992. Whilst continuing to do locum medical work in the UK and in Brisbane, Australia, he returned to Edinburgh University to complete his law degree in 1995. After completing a two year traineeship with Dundas & Wilson, Vinit called to the Bar to become an Advocate in 1999. He is the only practising member of the Scottish Bar to be dually qualified in law and medicine and has the unique distinction of having worked in each career for over a decade. He completed a three year term as an Advocate Depute prosecuting serious crime in the High Court. In addition to being an Advocate, Vinit has, since 2011, been a part-time Sheriff. He also chairs the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland and is a panel member on the Police Appeals Tribunal. He was a Standing Junior to the Scottish Government from 2005 to 2012. In his spare time, Vinit is a keen sportsman. He is a member at Golf House Club, Elie and Murrayfield Golf Club. He is part of the administrative team at Grange Junior Cricket Club.
