Welcome to the Junior School

Gavin calder junior and nurseryIt is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the web pages of the Edinburgh Academy Junior School. We are based on a beautiful campus in leafy Inverleith and have invested significantly in our facilities in the last ten years but it is the children and staff who make this school such a special place to be.

Being at a self-contained Junior School and Nursery allows our children to play and learn in an environment that has been designed and adapted for their particular needs prior to making the move across the Water of Leith to the Senior School.

My own school years were filled with great happiness and a sense of wonder and I have not lost this as an adult. Perhaps this is why I enjoy my job so much and recognise the huge privilege it is to be trusted to educate children at this really important stage in their development. From climbing trees; to teaching practical maths; to making music, life is never dull in my role.

Education has changed hugely with the coming of the new technological age and we constantly innovate and challenge ourselves to make sure that we are equipping our students with key skills of resilience, creativity, curiosity and independent thought. Our children are academically stimulated but in a collaborative environment where care, love and emotional security are recognised as crucial.

I am proud to be the Head of this school and I love the fact that our size means that all of the children take part in all areas of school life—not just those with particular aptitudes. I firmly believe that as a school we are big enough to matter but small enough to care and I make it my goal as Head to really get to know every child well as they progress through the school.

Hopefully these pages will answer many questions about life in the Junior School but static words and pictures cannot replace the feeling to be gained from a visit. Please feel free to come and meet us either at one of our Open Days or at a more convenient time.
