Length of Service: (EA 1966-76)

Charles worked at the BBC for 34 years until leaving in 2016. He was latterly Head of Sport for English Regions, responsible for the output of 40 local radio stations, 15 regional BBC services and their online platforms. He edited and produced at many big sporting events, from Olympic Games and World Cups to TV series on local football and Rugby League. Joining the BBC sports department in Queen Margaret Drive Glasgow from commercial radio in 1982, he was often called upon to report for a Radio Scotland leisure programme, covering subjects as diverse as birdwatching, dry stone dyking and making shepherd’s crooks!

Charles was educated at the EA from 1966–76, has a business diploma from Bradford School of Management, and is now a self-employed media consultant, and lecturer. He also lectures on sports and media presenting at home and abroad. He also chairs the London Branch of the Edinburgh Academical Club, having helped to revive the group in recent years. He is keen to develop things further, with more events and an active social media presence. He would love to hear of any Accie who could spare some time to help with the administration of the London Club.
