11 pupils travelled with myself and Ms McWilliam to Marrakesh and into the High Atlas mountains to climb Mt Jbel Toubkal, 4167m. This 8-day trip was an incredible experience with all pupils summiting the mountain on Wednesday 19th July, leaving the high camp at 0400 to arrive on the summit at 0830. It was amazing what you could do before a normal school day starts! The effects of altitude were always looming and we were careful to follow the wonderful leadership of Mike and Mohammed from "Go Venture" who ensured we all did everything we could do avoid Altitude Mountain Sickness.
The end of the week was spent in the city, enjoying the sites, sound and smells of Marrakesh! Many aspects of this trip were lead by the pupils and we all felt the benefit of this devolved leadership. Pupils learning how to look after each other, manage security, provide safe water for the team and supporting each other through some tough moments has left the group thirsty for their next high mountain challenge and many are already talking about heading out to Killimanjaro next year!
