Excellence for all
During the first two terms at the Senior School, pupils are encouraged to play rugby or hockey. A wider choice comes in at the start of the Fifths: soccer, badminton, basketball, weights, fitness, squash and aerobics.
In the summer the Geits and Seconds choose between cricket and athletics, with tennis to be added when the school becomes co-educational in 2008. Gradually the choice is widened until by the Fifths pupils are choosing from the full range, including tennis, weights, canoeing, sailing and softball. The school also has skiing and golf teams. All pupils (except 7th years) have Physical Education lessons in the gymnasium or in the yards once per week, and games either once or twice per week.
Coaching excellence
The coaching is of a very high standard and most pupils will represent the school at some time in their career. This has proven successful over the years where numerous Academy pupils have gone on to represent their country at senior level. On the left a cricketer receives coaching from Scottish international Mike Allingham, (Head of PE,) who will be remembered for a remarkable catch off Ricky Ponting in the World Cup.
Competitive matches
There is a very extensive programme of fixtures. Matches are played against other schools most weekends throughout the year. In addition to specialist PE staff, most other teachers are involved with games.
However sporting sucess is also measured by physical health and enjoyment. The Academy offers a great variety of sporting opportunity to tempt even those who do not think of themselves as competitive.

The Academy applied in September 2007 for planning permission for two all-weather playing pitches on the New Field Extension. We are committed to providing the best possible facilities for both team sports and training. The pitches not only allow hockey to flourish as the major winter sport for girls as well as an option for boys, but will also be used for training and fitness work in the winter. During the summer season the pitches will be transformed to provide up to nine tennis courts each. |

The school has a 25-yard small-bore range (under the Dining Hall).
The Academy Sports Centre, opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 1999, is situated in the grounds of The Edinburgh Academy Junior School on Arboretum Road. In addition to a versatile sports hall, it houses a gymnasium and squash courts. The centre is jointly funded by The Edinburgh Academy and the lottery sports fund. It is used during the day by staff, pupils and parents of pupils. The wider community use it in the evenings, during weekends and school holidays.
The majority of school sport is played at our extensive field close to the Junior School campus. Here are several rugby pitches, the main cricket square, and facilities for football and hockey.
The Academy also still uses the original Academy Field at Raeburn Place first opened for play in 1854 and now the home ground of the Edinburgh Academicals Cricket (1855) and Rugby (1857) clubs. The latter is the oldest football club in Scotland with either shape of ball. Raeburn Place was the site of the first ever international rugby match in 1871 and Scotland's international ground for 24 years.
Arboretum Field, overlooked by the sports centre, is used for Junior School rugby in the winter and athletics in the summer.
The gymnasium (left) occupies the first floor of the classically designed building at the north east of the Senior School site. Changing rooms are on the ground floor. The gym is used for PE lessons as well as badminton, basketball and fencing.
4 astroturf tennis courts are located on the Arboretum campus. Tennis is an important part of the Games curriculum and full use of this facility is made in the summer term.
