Bright Eyes and Lively Minds

The oldest boys and girls in the Junior School move on to become the Geits, the youngest pupils of the Senior School. There they join other new arrivals.

These are years of discovery in the classroom, and your child will learn his or her own strengths following a varied programme of study. That framework provides a solid base of knowledge, and experience of a full range of academic and, equally importantly, of practical subjects.

Enthusiasms and attitudes

In addition, each pupil has the opportunity to develop special enthusiasm in those areas which seize his or her interest. Although each course follows a targeted and a coherent syllabus, we encourage throughout a lively, thinking approach to learning.

This is the stage at which boys become young men and girls become young women; the phase in which attitude becomes even more important than ability. We work to manage those years patiently, to identify good goals for each pupil so that each can learn to work effectively and achieve soundly.

Expression and Expertise

Ambition to achieve

mountaineeringAmbition in the classroom, laboratory or studio remains the keynote throughout the Senior School.

Pupils and staff set their sights high. Every boy and girl is challenged to do their best and not to settle for the merely adequate. At the same time we try to ensure that learning becomes a pleasure to enjoy rather than a chore to endure.

Beginning in the fourth year at the Senior School, pupils follow a two-year core of GCSE subjects which guarantees both breadth and academic demand.

The sixth form

Highly qualified teachers provide the stimulus for academic achievement in all disciplines from maths to music; from languages to literature; from history and geography to technology and computing.

In the Sciences, the new James Clerk Maxwell Science Centre provides the focus for further development in an area which has seen Engineering feature as one of our top favoured university courses.

Educating the whole person

The school produces international performers in a variety of sports, eight sports just in recent years, from rugby to skiing and from fencing to athletics.

The Art Department seeks to develop creative ability, not merely in the most gifted but in every member of the school. Through sculpture, photography, pottery, life drawing and a range of other media, boys and girls work together and share ideas. Their teamwork, year after year, produces results of the highest standard.

The quality of music is equally renowned. An array of choirs, orchestras, jazz bands, small ensembles and pipe bands ensures that pupils of all abilities can enjoy a the opportunity to learn and to perform.

A world to explore

Borneo expeditionAs they grow, girls and boys are encouraged to look outwards to wider horizons. There are plenty of opportunities.

Expeditions have spanned the globe from the Amazon jungle to the Himalayas, whilst nearer home the mountaineering club, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Cadet Force and sailing club, as well as our field centre in the highlands of Scotland provide practical experience of life outside the classroom.

Charitable and community activities are also encouraged every year. In Drama, the school has a fine reputation with a wide range of opportunities for all ages to perform, to write and to direct.
