Academy principles small logo

Your child is not lost in the crowd

A small and select school, The Academy has a high staffing ratio which enables pupils to be provided with individual attention.

That attention is provided by truly dedicated staff of the highest academic quality. In our judgement this is the most important feature of any school.

Small numbers - everyone is an individual

There are under 500 pupils in the Senior School (10-18), about 315 in the Junior School, (4-10), and about 90 in the nursery (2-4). The small number of pupils are served by around a hundred staff, including permanent and visiting music teachers.

It is small classes and a high staffing ratio that make individual attention and personally tailored teaching possible. To be seen as an individual a child must not be crowded with many others in a large class where his share of the teacher's attention is only a few minutes per day. For a child to develop an inquiring mind, her teacher needs to be able to respond when she wants to ask a question. Like a large family, The Edinburgh Academy recognises and values every individual member.

Your child is not locked into one system

Scottish Highers, English A-Levels

Maxwell Science CentreRemarkably,  considering its small size,  the flexibility of The Edinburgh Academy's curriculum allows the school to offer courses leading to both Scottish and English examination qualifications.

GCSE is normally taken in the Fifth Year at the Senior School,  Scottish Higher in the Sixth Year,  and "A" Level in the Seventh Year.

This means that pupils coming from schools all over the United Kingdom and other countries,  and going on to universities in Scotland,  England or abroad,  find that The Edinburgh Academy offers them both continuity and development opportunities in their education. Covering the best of both curricula, we cater for those aiming at university entrance by way of Scottish Highers, or by way of "A" Levels

Encouragement to achieve

a summer lessonOver 175 years ago the founders of The Academy were motivated by the highest educational ideals. As the Edinburgh New Town grew, its leading citizens were not satisfied with mediocre education in overcrowded schools. They resolved to create a new school of their own in which excellence could be achieved, and they gave their academy a motto which reflected their aspirations.

Today that school, The Edinburgh Academy, still stands for excellence. We are not satisfied with merely adequate achievement. Our objective is for each child to be the best that he or she can be, and both the scale of our school and our method of working is dedicated to that end. In developing the potential of its successive generations of students, and in making a vital contribution to the wider community, The Academy aims to live by its motto: "Always Excel."

Dedicated staff

art workThe quality and dedication of The Academy's teachers has inspired its pupils to great achievements over the course of its history,  not just in their school years but in their adult lives.

Around the world,  many are the distinguished figures who look back upon their Academy education as the crucial first step on the ladder of their success.

Rich Extra-Curricular Life

Hampta PassThe Edinburgh Academy is rightly famed for its academic excellence,  but those who know the school tend almost to take its students' examination successes and university entrance for granted.

What really distinguishes an Academy education is what happens outside the regular academic programme,  in many cases outside the school and not infrequently outside the country!
