An independent day school for boys and girls

The Edinburgh Academy is an old established school, but we have always been willing to address the needs of modern society. We are after all educating the citizens of the twenty first century.

For almost 150 years the opportunities offered by The Edinburgh Academy were restricted to boys, but for four decades now our sixth form has been coeducational. Now coeducation has been extended to all age groups. Our Junior School became coeducational in 2007 and the Senior School followed in August 2008. We are confident that this change is for the benefit of both boys and girls.

Inspiration & Trust

If we are asked to encapsulate the ethos of The Edinburgh Academy in two words, what would those words be? 'Inspiration' would be the first and 'trust' would be the second. These are the keys to successful education, a process that it is really only possible to unlock on an individual basis.

A small school with small classes

This is a small school with small classes; your child is an individual here.

As far as possible a child's academic programme is tailored to fit him or her. We do not seek to force children into a pre-determined path. Each is helped to achieve in his own way. This requires time and patience, together with a high ratio of staff to students in order to ensure that teachers genuinely have time for each individual child.

Each boy and girl has strengths that they may not yet know; our job is to teach, to guide, and above all to encourage.

Commitment and Example

Each pupil is encouraged by personal commitment and by example. He or she will find good role models all around, both from teachers and from senior pupils, but those examples will be widely varied, not clones. Forget about figures showing the performance of the average child in a large school. Your child is not an average child; he or she is an individual person with unique talents and unique needs.

Examples and Role Models:

Class teachers have small classes

Mentors - older pupils helping younger ones

Edinburgh small classes

From the beginning, close personal attention for your child will be provided by a class teacher. Each responsible for little more than twenty individual pupils, class teachers look after the daily details of school life in The Edinburgh Academy, ensuring that good sense and ordinary courtesies become part of every day.

Edinburgh Academy mentoring

Older pupils play a vital role, passing on from year to year the culture that enables younger children to grow in confidence and self reliance. Through the mentoring system, they provide an immediate source of help in the event of any difficulties.

Year Heads exercise overall care

Teachers in and out of the classroom

Edinburgh Academy pastoral care

Overall supervision of academic and pastoral care is the responsibility of Year Heads and senior staff. There are regular and detailed consultations on the progress of each child. Personal programmes and targets are set and achievements both carefully monitored and appropriately celebrated.

When obstacles or difficulties arise we seek the best way forward for the child concerned. Where necessary our dedicated learning support staff will be involved in this process. All staff reinforce the best messages throughout their teaching, through school assemblies, through small group discussions and through individual guidance.

Edinburgh Academy Teacher leading outdoor expedition

At The Edinburgh Academy, teachers know their pupils as people, not just in the narrow confines of the classroom.

The rich variety of extra-curricular activities is a wonderful feature of this school, and it is amazing how both academic life and personal development flourish as a child realises that a teacher is more than just a person who knows a lot and tries to make him learn it! Teachers encourage pupils through their many activities to adopt a broad approach and to tackle their life with good humour and with steady resolve.
