A message from the Rector of The Edinburgh Academy

Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to visit The Edinburgh Academy website. I hope that it will answer many practical questions about The Academy and about the broad range of opportunity that we offer to each young person at every stage of his or her development.

The website does not, of course, attempt to replace our most important source of information, which is human contact. Please feel confident to get in touch or visit us if there is any issue or need that you would like to raise.

Our aims are uncomplicated:

1. We seek to develop the individual strengths of each member of the school. The transition to coeducation has not undermined our commitment to preserving a small school where each unique personality can be recognised and valued.

2. Good teachers inspire a child with a love of learning that endures long after specific facts are forgotten. We aim to foster in pupils of every ability a real sense of purpose, so that their individual gifts may be put to good use in the long years after school.

3. We wish to develop young people whose world is not centred upon themselves alone. Edinburgh Academy boys and girls are valued members of the community; commitment and a willingness to participate are their key features. We are proud that good behaviour is also a highly prized feature of life at the Academy; it is something that we expect of all our pupils.

Marco Longmore

Marco Longmore was brought up in Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. Moving to Edinburgh he studied History and Politics at Edinburgh University, developing a love of Medieval and Renaissance History.

From his PGCE training at Moray House College, he joined George Heriot’s School as a History and Modern Studies teacher. Over seven years at Heriot’s he was involved in a wide variety of clubs and games and went on to be a Year Head.

Promotion to Head of Department took him to George Watson’s College. During seven years at Watson’s he completed the Scottish Qualification for Headship through the University of Edinburgh.

In 2005 Marco moved to London to be the Senior Deputy Head at the leading co-educational school, Alleyn’s School in Dulwich.

Marco then joined The Edinburgh Academy in 2008 as Rector coinciding with the start of full co-education.

He is committed to the principles of co-education as the natural setting for young people to develop and learn.

The key to a successful education however is less to do with gender issues and much more to do with the culture and ethos of participation and involvement of all.

It is this that aids all our pupils to achieve their best results.

Partnership and Communication

The role of parents

role of parents

In achieving these objectives we have a very strong belief in our partnership with parents.

Our commitment to communication is two way. We will guide - but you can be assured that we also listen, as we seek the best for and from each member of the school. That is the reason for our extensive programme of pastoral care involving class teachers and year heads. In particular, my door is always open if you wish to discuss any matter with me.
