Purpose built nursery block

The new nursery building, which was delivered on schedule in September 2008, forms an integral part of the Junior School campus. The modern flexible facility comprises a large ground floor with four classrooms and a partial first floor which houses the after school club. The development is also complemented by fully landscaped gardens and an external play area. This sort of pupose built facility is rare amongst Edinburgh nurseries. Its scale is appropriate to small children. Its interior fittings are excellent and its external environment is second to none.

Advantages of the new nursery building

The New Nursery has its own designed for purpose play garden.

The children have access to the adjacent school sports centre for activities – especially useful on a wet day and for ‘Gyminis’ which happens every Wednesday morning.

They can take advantage of the nearby school adventure playground and use the Outdoor classroom/Wildlife garden.

The spacious vestibule/reception area is used for small group activities, for example when the school music specialist visits to do singing and music and movement.

Nursery building

Illustrated is the handing over of the new nursery building, which is located at the end of the existing car park space, thus visually enclosing the courtyard between the existing Junior School and the Sports Centre.

The new building provides an enclosed view on arrival at the school from Arboretum Road.

With demand for nursery places running at record levels, the new nursery will enable the needs of all our young people aged 2–5 to be met. We can now take 2 year olds all day.

Planning for a capacity of 90 children, the architects have come up with a very creative use of floor space, which allows for a flexibility of approach.

The new building has many unusual and child friendly details – for example:

Low level porthole windows;

A large flexible vestibule area that can be used for all sorts of things, such as small music or story groups, music and movement, or special art projects;

The dividing walls to each classroom can slide back to merge, say, two classrooms together should that be required.

Nursery Exterior

There is a covered play area outside each classroom for days weather is not so good but the children, being children, want to be out.

The New Nursery has its own designed for purpose play garden. The nursery staff have plans to develop this with the help of a specialist – for example put in fruit trees and a vegetable garden. The children themselves will grow vegetables and herbs.

Out of hours

At the Edinburgh Academy Junior School you can, if you choose, have your child of 3 years old and above looked after from 8am till 6pm every day throughout the year with only a few exceptions.

We offer a mixture of after school activities and after school club till 6 p.m, as well as an Early Birds Club from 8 a.m.

The new building gives us a first-class facility for After School care for the whole school. Our After School Club is greatly valued by our parents and the new building provides the type of facilities that working parents want for their children.
