Hospital role play
We have had an interest in hospitals recently as the result of one of the children having to spend some time in hospital. Many children have been engaged in role play and through discussion, many worries faced and sorted.
Denham Green Summer Outing
Pittencrief Park,
Oh what a lark!
We’ll play ’til it’s dark
At Pittencrief Park.
What a wonderful day, from singing on the bus (‘Oh you canny shove your granny off a bus!’ — there were a few worried glances from Daniel, whose lovely Granny had come with us on the bus) to our exploration of a real train engine at the park. Peacocks wandering past us, an exciting bear hunt through the woods, trip-trapping over the troll’s bridge and a picnic fit for a king! Fun races, lots of hot and happy faces and a snooze on the coach home … another successful day!

The nursery games got off to a rousing start with Edward Seaman providing musical accompaniment on the bagpipes as the children walked to the field. In cool and clouding conditions, children from Scott House and Denham Green enjoyed great fun in egg-and –spoon, hat, bean bag and flat races, with encouragement from staff and spectators alike.
As a culminating activity for the children who have been exploring the topic of wild animals, a visit was arranged to Scott House from a mini-zoo. The exhibit included a selection of exotic and domestic animals which the children were able to closely observe and sometimes even hold! Although some of the adults were a little hesitant when it came to patting the Madagascan Beatles and having a python draped around their neck, the children thoroughly enjoyed interacting with some of these amazing creatures up close. All in all, the visit was a wonderful success!
Mrs Denholm and her team put out an urgent appeal for more boxes of Kleenex after the Nursery’s entire supply of tissues was cleared out at the Nativity play. There was not a dry eye in the audience as the nursery children’s choir sang its way through a medley of songs that the children had learnt over the previous two weeks. The tissues ran out in under ten minutes — an Academy record — and fresh supplies had to be shipped in from the senior school. The one-off show had sold out months in advance, and many mums turned out an hour early to ensure they had front row seats. Latecomers had to make do with standing at the back!
On the morning of Football Day, the children arrived kitted up and raring to go. After being allowed to ‘get busy’ for the early part of the morning, the boys (and girls) were split into three groups, and the groups were taken oneby- one to the sports centre, where they participated in a stretching session, followed by a short skills demonstration and finally a few shorts authentic football drills. In the early afternoon, the children were fortunate enough to have a visit from one of the children’s fathers, who currently plays amateur league football. He explained why different boots are worn in different weather conditions, and also talked about the need for safety equipment on the field.
Pirate Day, what can we say,
After a blustery night, the day turned out fine and the Scott House Nursery children, staff and parents headed to Portobello beach for their summer outing. The children loved digging in the sand, climbing on the play-train in the park and eating their picnic snack outdoors. One or two escapees tried to go for a dip in the sea, but were captured by Miss Hope! The morning was completed with seaside action songs, stories and a chocolate frog for everyone. A big thank you to Miss Broadley, Mrs Galbraith and Miss Hope for giving the children such a lovely treat!
