Alien Day

The clock ticked as 8.45 a.m. approached. The noises from the cloakroom got louder and louder as more and more aliens beamed down. The bell rang, the door opened and aliens of every size, shape, colour and description rushed in. The long-awaited day had arrived at last!

The nursery was set up with space games to play, alien pictures to draw and colour, cold porridge and soap-flake slime to let the aliens feel that texture: a multitude of adventures to expand the mind of the most advanced space traveller. Aliens made their way around the activities, identifying each other from their alien wrist bands marked with their alien names.

No alien party would be complete without some parading around your friends, ‘squidging and squeaking’, or — in earthly language — ‘trick or treating’. Mrs Bashford, staff and boys around the school were delighted with a rendition of space and alien songs. As is the custom, the aliens were rewarded with a spacegum sweet. On their orbit around the school, the aliens landed on the back stairs where a snack was served. They munched into cat, bat and rat sandwiches, washed down with real blood-curdling milk!

A visit to the GP room was the next destination, where we engaged in team games during which the aliens discovered that it is not easy to play with squishy spacebags between your knees. They were relieved however by a surprise visit from Blowbot our new nursery robot. He entertained the aliens by turning round and round and whizzing up and down the room. They all took turns at working the controls, making great robotic moves! Lunch was a splendid affair with: crater mashed potatoes, antennae sausages and Martian squashed peas. This was followed by green space jelly and flying saucer chocolate cake. Dooking for apples, a selection of new space stories and more singing ended a wonderful fun-packed alien day. Till the next time … over and out.

Nursery Games

gamesThe nursery games got off to a rousing start with Edward Seaman providing musical accompaniment on the bagpipes as the children walked to the field. In cool and clouding conditions, children from Scott House and Denham Green enjoyed great fun in egg-and –spoon, hat, bean bag and flat races, with encouragement from staff and spectators alike.

Mums and Dads did their heroic bit at the end, as always in the parent’s races!

Mini-zoo visit to Scott House

zooAs a culminating activity for the children who have been exploring the topic of wild animals, a visit was arranged to Scott House from a mini-zoo. The exhibit included a selection of exotic and domestic animals which the children were able to closely observe and sometimes even hold! Although some of the adults were a little hesitant when it came to patting the Madagascan Beatles and having a python draped around their neck, the children thoroughly enjoyed interacting with some of these amazing creatures up close. All in all, the visit was a wonderful success!

Nursery Nativity

nativityMrs Denholm and her team put out an urgent appeal for more boxes of Kleenex after the Nursery’s entire supply of tissues was cleared out at the Nativity play. There was not a dry eye in the audience as the nursery children’s choir sang its way through a medley of songs that the children had learnt over the previous two weeks. The tissues ran out in under ten minutes — an Academy record — and fresh supplies had to be shipped in from the senior school. The one-off show had sold out months in advance, and many mums turned out an hour early to ensure they had front row seats. Latecomers had to make do with standing at the back!

The show was a great mix of old favourites (‘Away in a Manger’) and new songs (‘Light the Lamp, Joseph’ and ‘Hurry Little Donkey’). By the end, even the toughest dads started to get misty-eyed as the cattle were lowing and the baby was awake. And next year, do not miss … the Nursery Christmas single.

Football Day

footballOn the morning of Football Day, the children arrived kitted up and raring to go. After being allowed to ‘get busy’ for the early part of the morning, the boys (and girls) were split into three groups, and the groups were taken oneby- one to the sports centre, where they participated in a stretching session, followed by a short skills demonstration and finally a few shorts authentic football drills. In the early afternoon, the children were fortunate enough to have a visit from one of the children’s fathers, who currently plays amateur league football. He explained why different boots are worn in different weather conditions, and also talked about the need for safety equipment on the field.

The day ended with more exercise, for staff and children alike, in the form of another training session which involved a minigame, penalty practice, dribbling skills and more. The boys then got their half-time oranges before heading back to the nursery for collection and a well-deserved rest.

Pirate Day

pirate dayPirate Day, what can we say,
Another swashbuckling time!
With Captain Hooks and fearsome Daves,
We sailed the seas across the waves.
We walked the plank and fought a shark,
We stayed outside ’til nearly dark.
Our treasure chests were full of gold,
We had to hide them in the hold.
Now off to bed, a pirate’s done,
But Yo Ho Ho, we had lots of fun!

Scott House Summer Outing

summer outingAfter a blustery night, the day turned out fine and the Scott House Nursery children, staff and parents headed to Portobello beach for their summer outing. The children loved digging in the sand, climbing on the play-train in the park and eating their picnic snack outdoors. One or two escapees tried to go for a dip in the sea, but were captured by Miss Hope! The morning was completed with seaside action songs, stories and a chocolate frog for everyone. A big thank you to Miss Broadley, Mrs Galbraith and Miss Hope for giving the children such a lovely treat!
