mike blair - former Academy studentSENIOR SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Academy is delighted to announce the creation of new Sports Scholarships to complement the existing awards for academic excellence and for outstanding talent in art and music. Our scholarships are designed both to reward excellence and to enable pupils to attend the Academy who would not otherwise be able to do so. The value of scholarships can be up to 100% of the tuition fees. Unconditional awards of up to 25% of the tuition fees can be topped up by additional bursaries where parental means would otherwise be insufficient to meet the balance of the fees.

Sports Scholarships

Sports Scholarships are aimed at outstanding performers. With this new initiative we are looking for youngsters with the potential to become the next generation of Academy pupils to gain representative honours and follow in the footsteps of Michael Blair (rugby), Stuart Moffat (cricket and rugby), Georgina Usher (fencing) and many others like them. Candidates for sports scholarships will be expected to undergo a practical test of their abilities. One scholarship is available in each year group.

Art Scholarships

There are two Art Scholarships. The Duncan Pettigrew Scholarship is available to a boy leaving primary or prep school. The scholarship honours Duncan Pettigrew, a pupil of exceptional artistic ability who sadly died of leukemia at the age of only 19. The Mark Cheverton Scholarship is open to boys or girls entering the Sixth Form (S5) and is named after a late Head of Art, whose methods and successes were the foundation of the department’s current reputation for excellence and inspirational teaching in art and design. Mark and his wife went on to be founders of the Leith School or Art before their untimely death. Candidates for both awards will be expected to bring with them a portfolio of their own work.

Music Scholarships

There are also two Music Scholarships, one for pupils leaving primary or prep school and one for entry into the Sixth Form. Music forms a large part of Academy life with nearly 40% of the pupils singing or playing an instrument. The chamber choir and pipe band both have reputations which travel beyond the boundaries of Scotland, while the full choir and the various orchestras and other groups continue to earn local acclaim. We are seeking to reward young musicians with ability in more than one area and who may go on to join the increasing number of Academical professional musicians – which includes such non-classical musicians as Roy Williamson (Corries); Paul Jones (ex-Manfred Mann); Guy Berriman (Coldplay); Tom and Phil Bancroft (jazz).

Academic Scholarships

Academic Scholarships are available for boys entering the Geits (P7), Seconds (S1) and Thirds (S2) and for boys and girls entering the Sixth Form (S5). The younger boys are expected to show their ability in English and Maths only. At Thirds level papers are set in English, Maths, French and Science; candidates must show excellence in three of the four papers. At Sixth level candidates choose four subjects in which to be examined; again performance in the best three is taken into account.
