No sign of a wind-down as the term approaches its close: athletics heats, full programme of cricket fixtures on Saturday, Art and Design Technology Exhibitions just ahead.  On top of that, we had wonderful music this weekend, including a most stylish performance by the Chamber Choir on Friday, Piping and Drumming Competitions at Loretto on Sunday, and then on Sunday evening, the Choral Concert in St Stephen’s Centre.

Thanks as always to the huge number of pupils and Choral Society members who take part in these activities and who get so much out of them, and special thanks to the teachers who ask and achieve such good standards.  A special mention in this instance must go to Michael Gray and Jakob Jorgensen, our Piping and Drumming specialists, and to Peter Backhouse who assembled a huge choir, a fine orchestra and wonderful soloists to create a sound and an occasion to be remembered.  He himself gave the evening his personal accolade: “It was quite good”

Just like all the Primary 1 – 3 boys and girls racing towards the finish line at their Sports Day on Friday, we are all racing towards the end of term and the start of the summer holidays! There is a lot to pack in over these last ten days and I appreciate that many of you will have very full diaries as a result. Thank you, once again, for all your wonderful support for all the different school events which have been happening of late, and for those still to come. The Early Years Sports Day was indeed a great success, held in glorious sunshine and great enjoyment was had by all.

The African Children’s Choir arrive on Tuesday and we hope that they will be able to give a short rendition of their repertoire on Wednesday morning at 8.40am – a last minute ‘plug’ for their concert on Wednesday evening!

One of the highlights of the school calendar is definitely the Primary 6 musical, and we are all very much looking forward to Aladdin, which has been masterfully put together by Mrs Russell and Mr Dickenson, for whom this is his very last show!

If any of you, would like to show your appreciation for all the work Mr Dickenson has done for the Junior School over the past 13 years, we are collecting contributions to his leaving gift in the Junior School office.

Third Year Play

Macbeth and the Rebels’ Plot

For his first school play, Christopher Turley gave himself and his young cast quite a challenge.  That they not only pulled it off, but provided the enthralled audience with a hugely entertaining evening, was due largely to their combined dedication and talents as an ensemble.  With thirty-five scenes and a split stage, the audience had to be on their toes to keep up with the parallel plots, excerpts from Macbeth and intrigues within the King’s Men.

It is the spring of 1606, and the King’s Men are about to start rehearsals for a new tragedy, Macbeth, at the Globe Theatre.  Just across the river, the tortures and trials of the alleged Powder Plot conspirators continue.  Playwright, John O’Connor presents a powerful re-creation of these two simultaneous events – and a wonderful introduction to ‘The Scottish Play’.

The most riveting scenes are probably those in which we see Macbeth being rehearsed and then the text discussed by the actors, in relation to the Powder Plot trials.  Freddie Thomson and Kieran Baker are Richard Burbage and Samuel Gilburne, who play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.  We see them rehearsing some of the most memorable scenes from Shakespeare so convincingly that we want them to go on.  Indeed, Kieran’s Lady M was delivered with great strength, understanding and menace.  But O’Connor’s purpose is not only to bring a human element to the proceedings but also to get the actors and audience involved in dissecting the components and characters of his great tragedy, and so we are tantalised by snippets and then made to ponder their relevance and dramatic power.  It’s a really rewarding experience.  The young cast brought Shakespeare and the King’s Men alive and we really enjoyed the way in which they revelled in WS’s words and conundrums.

Many of the cast have only a few lines in which to establish their characters and with the help of an array of bright and evocative costumes this was achieved with great authority.  Most the action takes place backstage at the Globe and in the adjoining actors’ haunt The Mermaid tavern and the atmosphere in both of these settings was clearly and cleverly evoked by simple staging ideas and lighting.

Macbeth and The Powder Plot both end with executions and as we reach the climax of the drama, the plots intertwine more and more so that when Father Henry Garnet’s head is mounted on a pole and Macduff (gallantly played by Angus Lutton) enters with the slain King’s head, the audience may be forgiven for a moment of deja-vu.  As O’Connor points out in his stage directions, the audience in the Globe would certainly make the connection and heed the warning so clearly dramatised by WS.  And that is a nice touch in the play, we never see WS, but his presence pervades the whole – and did he, or did he not, play the Third Murderer ?

Congratulations, Mr Turley; welcome to the Director’s chair.  You look settled in it already!

Pipes & Drums – Scottish Schools Competition

The Edinburgh Academy Pipes & Drums had a successful day at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships, held at Loretto School on Sunday 15th June. The boys and girls in the band have shown solid commitment and dedication in the recent weeks leading up to the event and the improvements made by the band have been excellent. Although the band did not achieve the usual top three placing, there were some excellent prizes won. The drum corps came second in the contest for the “Best Drum Corps” prize, closely beaten by a strong Dollar corps for the second year in a row. The band was pleased also to receive the first prize for “Dress & deportment”, a prize which has been won by the Edinburgh Academy Pipe Band many years in a row.

Also in the solo competitions the Edinburgh Academy was well represented in the prizes. Graham Inglis and Jack Davis, Pipe Major and Leading Drummer of the pipe band, took the top awards of the day by winning the Senior Piping and Senior Drumming respectively – an outstanding achievement for both of these excellent musicians. Fergus Nimmo came in first place in the Junior Drumming, playing at the competition for the first time, and Christopher Seaman received a very respectable second prize in the Intermediate Drumming. Finally, Edward Seaman and Christopher Allan both won the Dress and Deportment prize in their respective events – it is always nice to see the boys looking smart and taking pride in wearing their uniform. Huge congratulations to the prize winners and thank you to all band members and soloists for their contribution to a very successful Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championship.

Rector's Retirement

For those of you who did not receive my letter, to mark the Rector's retirement the Parents’ Association will not for once be holding a champagne reception or organising a collection for a gift. Instead at our suggestion, and with his specific approval, those of you who wish to mark your appreciation of his dedication and contribution to the school over the last decade and more are invited to make a donation to the Bursary Fund, a cause close to the Rector's heart (and one to which he has been contributing personally for the last ten years). To start the ball rolling the Parents’ Association will be donating £250.

If you wish to make a donation please send it to the Senior or Junior School office in an envelope clearly marked for the attention of the Parents’ Association.

All cheques should be made payable to the Edinburgh Academy Foundation. Many thanks.

U10(A) v Merchiston

On a sunny morning Merchiston won the toss and elected to bat. Simpson (3-1-4-3) and Macpherson (3-0-18-0) delivered a fine opening spell of swing bowling, reducing Merchiston to 19 for 3. Chen (3-0-10-2) and Afshar (3-0-16-1) continued the fine seam attack, bowling an excellent line and length bringing Merchiston to 40 for 6. However, Hopton (30) kept Merchiston in the game despite Welsh (2-0-7-0), Lothian (2-1-5-1), Morrison (1-0-4-0), Hunter (1-0-1-1) and Ramsay (1-0-1-0) all contributing to a fine Academy fielding display reducing Merchiston to 72 for 9 from 20 overs. In reply, Simpson (24) and Afshar (2) produced a fine opening partnership taking the score to 36 without loss. Then came the game’s turning point when Simpson smashed a short ball and was brilliantly caught one handed at mid-wicket. This brought in the fast running and good eye of Murray (12) who took the score on to 62 leaving the Academy needing 11 from the final 3 overs to win. Unfortunately, a collapse ensued with the Academy losing 4 wickets for 2 runs and falling just short by 8 runs. What an exciting game and well done to everyone who played and supported the team!

Merchiston 72 for 9, EAJS 64 for 9.

U10(B) v Merchiston

Another very exciting match saw both teams bat and bowl with great assurance and commitment. Bell and Marks top scored on 30 without losing wickets and set up an exciting finish. Bell again proceeded to bowl with authority and despite the Academy dropping chances, some fine teamwork brought the teams level. Merchiston just managing the final run in the last over. Well done to all who played and supported the teams.

EAJS 317 for 4,  Merchiston 318 for 3

U10 Cricket v Loretto

EAJS (1) 288 for 3, Loretto 271 for 7

EAJS (2) 301 for 3, Loretto 256 for 3

Some fine bowling, batting and fielding led to two excellent wins for the Academy teams. Well done to everyone who played and thank you to all who supported the matches.

ATHLETICS

Edinburgh Schools and Scottish Schools Relay and Pentathlon

A tremendous week on the athletics field starting with Edinburgh Schools for our U14 and U15 athletes where we won numerous medals, with Golds for Freddy Smith, Tom Campbell, GP Franchi, Chris Thomson, Jamie Farndale, and the Under 14 relay team. The performance of the day was Chris Thomson's throw of 42.50 in the Under 14 javelin. This throw is ranked 2nd in the UK this year and beats the Under 15 School record held by Andrew Scott by 2 metres. If he throws as far in the Games he would break the Under 14 Games record by nearly 10 metres (There are no school Under 14 records.)

An even better day for Academy athletics on Saturday where the Under 14 relay team of Fred Smith, Chris Thomson, Davis Catonio and Robin Rowbottom won the Scottish Schools Under 14 relay with plenty to spare. Fergus Greig came 3rd in the S1 Triathlon, Jamie Farndale came 4th and Angus Inwood 5th (result to be confirmed) in the U15 Pentathlon. In the Under 17 Pentathlon Angus Normand picked up a silver medal and Marshall Catonio a bronze.

Brodie Ballantine won the Open Pentathlon just pushing Rory Paterson into second place. Brodie won a splendid cup, the first time it has been awarded to an Academy athlete in 17 years.

Well done to all athletes.

CRICKET

1st XI v Dollar Academy

An excellent game that could have gone either way. On a beautiful morning Dollar won the toss and batted on a good pitch. Dollar looked a good batting unit, but only their West Indian made it count with a well played 78. Our bowling was fairly steady, but we leaked too many runs with some careless fielding. Our reply was interrupted by numerous rain showers and a lunch break. Despite this we got into a good position, needing 6 an over off the last ten overs with 6 wickets left. Unfortunately we played a number of injudicious shots and crumbled under the pressure of the chase. The highlight of our innings had been a solid 58 from Nick Aspinall, his maiden fifty for the 1st XI.
