The Queen’s Hall Concert never fails to impress, and this year’s event was no exception. Younger players, senior musicians, soloists alike played with such impressive confidence and accuracy, and communicated their performances with a real sense of style. I am sure that parents, staff and friends alike felt that this was not just a school concert; it was an entertainment. Thank you to all who played and sang, to the many folk who came to support, and to all those who encourage the Academy’s musicians at every stage of their development. As we mentioned last week, music is at the heart of the school, and the heart is in very good health. John Light |

Our Euro Quiz team emerged winners in the Debating Chamber of the Scottish Parliament last Monday, beating off competition from over 250 primary schools across Scotland! The final round was a nail biting experience, played against the buzzer and I foresee worthy contenders for University Challenge in our team members who were Patrick Christie, Peter Jacobs, Saul Melvin Farr, Alasdair Gillies and Adair Wood. The ultimate prize for them is now an invitation to see round the European Parliament in Brussels in the Autumn. A huge thank you is due to the team coach, Mr Colin McCloghry, and to the Mums and Dads, whose European knowledge is now second to none! Our Eco Day was fantastically successful, and I would like to thank the many parents who contributed to its success in so many different ways, whether it was digging the garden or giving talks to the children on different environmental issues. We hope that this will all go towards our Green Flag, which should be flying at the Junior School before very long. Caroline Bashford, Headteacher |

Euroquiz National FinalMonday 12th May 2008 It is with huge pleasure that I announce that the Edinburgh Academy Junior School team won the Euroquiz National Final held at the Scottish Parliament last week. In a field of 25 teams from across Scotland, a score of 136 out of 140 took them to the final round where they faced West Kilbride Primary School. They proved unbeatable in a tense buzzer round where they triumphed 9-7. Highlights of the final can be found on the Events in the Parliament page on www.holyrood.tv. I am immensely proud of Patrick Christie (P6M), Saul Melvin-Farr (P6M), Adair Wood (P6K), Alasdair Gillies (P6R) and Peter Jacobs (P6R) for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm throughout the competition and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on an outstanding victory. The Euroquiz team would like to thank Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET), Standard Life and The Scottish Parliament for a truly special day. Colin McCloghry Boost your Brainwith MindLab at the Edinburgh Academy! This is the claim of one of our after school activities at the Junior School and it has turned out to be true! A team of four pupils, Natalie Herbert P6R, Kelvin Chen P5L, Ben Jourdan P5T and Douglas Hardie P5L represented the Junior School at the Scottish MindLab Olympics conveniently held in Edinburgh on Saturday 26th April. For two hours, 8 teams from different parts of Scotland toiled and sweated in silence over a series of board games. Our team did very well and were excellent representatives of the school. Although Davidson’s Mains Primary School emerged the victors on the day, one of our team, Ben Jourdan, has been selected to represent Scotland at the MindLab Olympics in Istanbul. He flies out on Friday 30th May, for a weekend of fun and competition. We wish him good luck and “Bon Voyage”! There is more information at www.mindlabedinburgh.com. CCF GlidingSeven RAF cadets from the 4ths were able to take advantage of excellent gliding weather at Kirknewton on Sunday. The usual 4 minute flight duration was extended by soaring in rising thermals - in one case for 36 minutes - and all cadets had at least one flight of 8 minutes or longer. The result at the end of the day was a batch of gliding certificates to mark their progress in flying training. The day was even more enjoyable as several cadets had also been present the week before when low cloud and poor visibility had prevented any flying. However for this Sunday another school had cancelled their slot and our cadets were given a rare opportunity to have a second chance so soon after the first. JA Smith Quiz TeamsLast weekend the Junior Quiz Team of Alastair Benn (Captain), Domhnall McGuigan, Jamie Allan, John Smyth and Rocky Li put on a very good show in the Scottish rounds of the Junior Schools’ Challenge quiz competition, which was held at Henderson Row. In their own triad, they saw the Rudolf Steiner School off with an impressive score of 500-210. However our team then came up against eventual finalists Stewart’s Melville, and were beaten 160-280; this meant that the team narrowly missed out on a place in the finalists’ triad. They showed an impressive range of knowledge, nevertheless, and were very fast on the buzzer. The Senior Team had a similar experience in March at Dollar. They notched up impressive victories against St Aloysius and Hutcheson’s GS, but were defeated very narrowly by Merchiston, then slightly more convincingly by Dollar, and ended up second in their pentad, also missing out (just) on a place in the final. (Dollar were the eventual Scottish winners.) The Senior Team comprised Simon Kay (Captain), Alex Sutherland, Domhnall McGuigan and Michael Scott; they were kept on their toes in practice sessions by Jamie Thornton, David Rushworth, Henry Gray, Alastair Benn and Jamie Allan. Thank you to all mentioned above for taking the time and trouble to attend practices and for giving up their Saturdays to represent the Academy in such an impressive manner. U11 Cricket v Fettes (20 overs)EAJS 107 for 6, Fettes 38 all out On a very wet and overcast morning the Academy were, unsurprisingly, put into bat on a very soft pitch. Fettes opening bowlers immediately put the pressure on taking 3 quick wickets leaving the Academy reeling on 18 for 3. In came Mackay(15) once again to steady the ship with a fine display of driving half volleys and taking quick singles. With some excellent running and hitting bad balls, partnered with Troup (7), Christie (14) and Simpson (13), the score moved to a creditable 86 for 4 before Mackay was caught at mid-on trying to accelerate the score further. This brought Afshar (16 n.o.) and Simpson together to produce a superb cameo partnership of 21 including some fine driving and pulling for 4! With a total of 107 to defend, the Academy duo of Kinghorn (4-0-19-3) and Melvin-Farr (4-0-10-1) set about the Fettes openers, bowling with pace and accuracy to demolish the top order to 25 for 5. This brilliant start was then contributed to in fine form by Lopes (2-0-3-2), Milne (2-0-4-0) and Peters (0.3-0-0-1), reducing Fettes to 38 all out and to bring a decisive victory by 69 runs! A fantastic team performance! Well done, everyone! Thank you to all who braved the weather to support the team. Mark Enos, Head of Junior PE Senior CRICKET1st XI Report
In response we knocked off the runs in fairly quick order with an aggressive knock from David Rushworth.

The Forty Club struggled to reach any sort of total against some steady bowling. The performance of the day came from Rob Madden with his best spell of the season so far.
