Rector
With exam time approaching fast, may I make another plea to all candidates to use their study time wisely. Study leave can be extremely fruitful – but is often frittered away because of a lack of structure and a “tomorrow will do” mentality. Please follow two guidelines: (a)Set yourself a programme and stick to it; that will bring all sorts of benefits in the future. (b)Seek advice from teachers. All too often, their offers of help are neglected; their experience is vital in the final weeks of your courses. We look forward to the visit of the incoming Rector, Mr Marco Longmore, on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. He will attend Morning Assembly on Wednesday, and thereafter will spend his time primarily with Department Heads at Henderson Row. He is then due to visit again at the end of May when the Junior School will be his priority. John Light |

It has been reported to me that the one item most often reported on in this weekly bulletin is the subject of parking! Unfortunately I have to raise this matter again as this week I received two letters from residents of Kinnear Road and Kinnear Rise complaining of parents parking across their driveways and double parking. They feel, and I share that concern, that there is ‘an accident just waiting to happen.’ Thank you to those of you who now walk the short distance from Inverleith Place; I would urge those of you who still insist on double parking in Kinnear Road to resist the temptation and please park further afield. Thank you for your anticipated support. The Spring Fair was an unqualified success, and thanks to you and the children’s entrepreneurial skills, the sum raised was over £1200! This is a record for the Junior School and we are delighted to be in a position to hand over cheques to the World Wildlife Fund, Global Gateway (Botanics) and our own Wildlife Garden. All of these charities were chosen by our very own Charities Committee. Caroline Bashford, Headteacher |

Patrick Christie (P6M), Saul Melvin-Farr (P6M), Adair Wood (P6K), Peter Jacobs (P6R) and Alasdair Gillies (P6R) won the Edinburgh heat back in December against strong opposition and now have to face 24 other regional winners for the Euroquiz trophy. U10 cricket v LorettoThe Academy fielded two 8-a-side ‘kwik’ style teams against formidable opposition. However, some of our fielding and bowling was excellent with many players taking wickets, catches and run-outs. Our batting showed promise especially when we defended good balls and ran between the wickets intelligently. The teams agreed to work on playing with a straight bat! That said, the enthusiasm and commitment was outstanding - well done, everyone! Keep working on it at practice. EAJS ‘A’ 150 for 8, Loretto 171 for 7 Mark Enos, Head of PE ATHLETICSV Fettes, Merchiston and Stewart’s Melville: U17 and Open Merchiston 265, Stewart’s Melville 225, Edinburgh Academy 218, Fettes 210 Some excellent individual efforts but also some disappointing performances and late withdrawals from events saw us come third overall in this match. We compete against Stewart’s Melville again on Tuesday so it would very good to turn this result around. V Watson’s: Open, U17,U15,U14 Team athletics at its best as it went down to the wire with the Open Relay just pipped at the line to seal a Watson’s victory. Great entertainment and some tremendous performances. The U14 team were dominant with Freddie Smith, Chris Thompson, Davis Catonio setting new PBs in every event and Fergus Greig in 3 out of 4. Smith and Thompson won all their events. The best performances in the U15 group were Tom Campbell in HJ with a PB of 1.56m, Angus Inwood winning his 800 and 1500m and Jamie Farndale's win in the 100m. Notable wins in the U17s were Nasos Plevris in Discus, GP Franchi in 800 and 1500m and Sam Nicholson in Shot (13.19) - he is getting very close to the school record set 21 years ago by his uncle and is throwing well beyond the Games record. In the Open, our captain Brodie Ballantine was in fine form winning 400m, hurdles, LJ and javelin, and Zak Muluzi won the HJ . Open: EA 67, Watson’s 63 GOLFIndependent Schools Golf Association Finals Sun 27th and Mon 28th April Wokefield Park, Reading This final included teams from independent schools from all over Britain, with the Academy qualifying as runners-up from the Scottish Competition. Millfield School were justifiably favourites with their team comprising three scratch golfers; most other schools had teams similar to ours - Chris Duncan (H’cap 3), Bertie Allison (H’cap 8) and Nick Peoples (H’cap 8). Sunday saw us arrive via Heathrow terminal 5 to find that the start had been delayed by a thunderstorm. The afternoon turned out to be dry but windy making the 7000 yard course very difficult. The best score in the first day of the competition was a 3 over par 75 which made Chris’s score of 85 and Bertie’s of 86 look very respectable. This placed the team 12th overall (and all three players avoided the dreaded 7.34am tee time for those at the tail end of the competition). Sunday saw another dry but windy day. Most players managed to cope a little better with these conditions except our players. This meant that we slipped back to 15th place overall. The event was most enjoyable; and all four sets of golf clubs made an uneventful journey (twice) through Heathrow. N Armstrong CRICKET1st XI The 1st XI are proving themselves to be consistently inconsistent. It was an important toss to win and we bowled steadily with special plaudits to Rob Madden and Nick Hunt. Strathallan had struggled throughout, but did use up their full quota of overs. In reply the two Nicks batted very sensibly making good decisions on shot selection against a steady medium paced attack. The outfield did quicken up and we ended up passing their total in 30 overs. There is a challenging week ahead with our cup semi-final v Lothian Schools on Thursday and then Merchiston away on Saturday. Saturday 17th May: I am afraid there are no fixtures on this day as Stewart’s Melville have changed their half term dates and it has not been possible to find replacement fixtures.
