Welcome back to all for the new term. We hope that it will offer opportunities for all pupils, leading to good successes in the next months and beyond. On an important safety point, may we make a joint plea to all parents who drop off and pick up outside or near the Junior School. During the holidays, we received an official reply from the Council, stating that they would no longer be painting a single yellow line down the East side of Arboretum Road. It was considered to be against the Safer Routes to School policy, which is actively encouraging alternative means of transport to school. The Council also pointed out that it has created a pedestrian crossing at the Inverleith Place/Arboretum Road junction, which should enable parents to park a couple of minutes away from the school and walk the short distance to the entrance. Respectfully, but firmly, may we ask this: Junior School parents: please adopt this practice – i.e. park away from the school and walk to the entrance. Senior School parents: after games, please pick up pupils on Inverleith Place, not outside the Junior School gates or on Kinnear Road. Double parking and congestion are a worrying hazard, and we do ask for your cooperation. John Light and Caroline Bashford |

Welcome back to the summer term although temperatures have not even felt like Spring, let alone Summer. I do hope that you all had a very enjoyable Easter break and have gathered strength for what promises to be a very busy term. Work on the new Nursery and After School Centre has gone very well over the holiday period and to date, they are on schedule to complete for the end of August. If you are interested in seeing how the finished building will look, there are 3-D images on the website and pinned up on the fencing close to the entrance to the construction site. Do go and have a look. An important change to the dates for this term is the postponement of the visit of the African Children’s Choir. This will now take place on Wednesday, 18th June in the Senior School Hall. We are hoping for a sell-out audience, so please put that date in the diary amongst all the many other exciting events happening this term! Caroline Bashford, Headteacher |

Art trip to Washington and New YorkDuring the first week of the Easter holidays, 35 pupils and 5 staff went to Washington and New York to visit some of the finest art galleries and to see some of the best known pieces of art in the flesh, whilst also discovering countless new artists for further exploration. Armed with personalised sketchbooks and pencil cases the group demonstrated considerable stamina over the week and came back with books full and minds overloaded. We visited the Hirshorn, the Phillips collection, the enormous National Gallery of Art in Washington, as well as walking from the Capitol to the Lincoln memorial. We also had evening trips to see ‘Stunning’ at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre and ‘Paranoid Park’ at the E street cinema. In New York we went to MOMA, PS1, Guggenheim, The Metropolitan, The Frick and the smaller Chelsea galleries as well as drawing in Central Station, going up the Empire State Building, Central Park, China town/Little Italy, Ground Zero, Battery Park, Times Square, the Flatiron building, and even squeezed in ‘Abercrombie & Fitch’. This was a fantastic group to take away who were always positive however tired their feet may have got, or how lost we were on the subway! A fuller account of this trip will appear in the Chronicle. DL Prosser Music MarathonSaturday April 12th: 3-9pm in the Hall Everyone going on the orchestral tour to Italy in October (apart from those engaged by the Duke of Edinburgh) – with some generous support from others - took part in this most enjoyable informal and varied event, aimed at raising funds for the tour and for the Practice-a-thon scheme organised by the Malcolm Sargent Children Cancer charity. Well done to all – from Alastair Benn, who got us started with 40 minutes of music on three instruments (with excellent family assistance), to a very promising set from Sam and his Magical Minions near the end. Sponsorship sheets and money should be handed in to Dr Coad as soon as possible. P5/6 Cross Country Championship 2008On a marvellous day for running, 96 boys and girls from P5 and P6 contested within a differentiated race for individual medals and the Division Cup won by Kinross last year. All runners made a choice to compete in the long (3.7km) or short (2km) course i.e. 1 or 2 laps of Inverleith Park. All competitors ran brilliantly, showing good technique and intelligent pacing to provide the spectators with exciting finishes to all the races. The support of all the runners was excellent. A magnificent achievement by all! Well done, everyone! Thank you to all who participated and who supported this hugely enjoyable and successful event. The weather, as usual, was poor and all who competed should be congratulated for simply getting around, let alone producing some fine golf. The Addis Cup (4ths–7ths) was very hotly contested with both Nick Peoples and Bertie Allison shooting fine scores of 77 on the Braid No 1 course. Following usual amateur golf rules, Bertie won by virtue of covering the last nine holes in fewer shots than Nick. In the Bryce Trophy (Geits–3rds) Robbie Orr won for the third year in a row. His round of 68 was a mere 6 over par on the tricky Braid Princes course. Alastair Benn (77) and Tom Gray (78) were unlucky to come up against such a fine golfer and theirs would have been winning scores in recent years. Tom will at least have a another chance of winning at this age group next year. N Armstrong ATHLETICS· Brodie Ballantine has been selected as Captain and Tom Brown as Vice-captain. · Training took place this Saturday morning although the conditions were not favourable! · Next Saturday 19th the Trials for the team take place starting at 9.30am. All athletes who would like to come down and be recorded for times and distances are most welcome. The programme of events is on the athletics notice board. · This year see the 150th year of the Academy Games. There will be a few special events, and we hope to start the day off with a champagne breakfast for interested parents and Academicals. RUGBYThe Under 15 rugby team led by Scott Heaney have had an excellent season, reaching the semi-final of the Bell Laurie U15 cup. On Wednesday night they played a short match against the BATS U15 as a curtain raiser to the Edinburgh Accies v the Barbarians. For the record they won 3 tries to 1. The school pipe band then performed splendidly before the main match kicked off, which included recent leavers Danny Teague (man of the match), Nathan Pike, Chris Dickie, Jamie Henderson and Paul Loudon all playing for the Accies; and Stuart Moffat and Tam McVie playing for the Barbarians. EA Summer Rugby Course 2008Open to all EA pupils from the current P3 to the current 5ths. Monday 11th August to Friday 15th August 10am to 3pm each day. Cost £90 per person. Free gift included. Cheques to be payable to Mike Allingham. To book a place contact Mike Allingham on 624 4959 or mjga@edinburghacademy.org.uk Rugby for All – in the North Edinburgh CommunityThis Wednesday, 16 April at Raeburn Place, BATs U18 will play Merchiston Castle School – who are the outstanding school side in Scotland this season, winning the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Cup. This game marks the end of our third season and we would like to see as many Accie players and supporters there as possible to help us celebrate and to support some of Accies' future players. The BATs team will be made up from the wide North Edinburgh community and will be the best side we can get on the night from young people from Broughton High School, Trinity Academy, Drummond and Craigroyston Community High School, Fettes, Edinburgh Academy and from the regular BATs Under 18s. We hope to include those U18s and U17s who are part of this season’s Scotland age group squads/teams. Last year around 14 players who had been involved with BATs in one way or another entered senior rugby, this year we have a very young U18 side, so only expect a hand full to enter senior rugby – it is our aim to get around 14 each year in the future. We are using the game against Merchiston to raise funds for BATs and will have an admission charge of £5 for adult (over 18). Please put come down to Raeburn Place and help us to secure our future by attending the game with your friends. Remember last year’s game against Bell Baxter was a cracker!! I look forward to seeing you at Raeburn Place on Wednesday - the bar opens at 5.30 – the kick off at 6.30. |
