RECTOR

It was a pleasure to welcome Lord Falconer of Thoroton MA, QC on Friday, as he conducted the formal opening of the James Clerk Maxwell Science Centre.  He spoke very warmly of the Academy where he spent his younger years as a pupil, and it was particularly heartening to see his clear wish to speak not to just a few but to a good number of pupils, staff and guests during his flying visit.  His schedule for the day was hair-raising, and we were very grateful to him for his time and his support, and equally grateful to all who worked so hard to make the occasion match the quality of the building.
We would dearly have liked to have included all in the ceremonial of the day, but that was sadly not possible.  Congratulations nevertheless to the Pipe Band and to the Chamber Choir for their very stylish contribution - and to a fine trumpeter whose fanfare and whose bearing were of the highest order.

HEADTEACHER

Friday was definitely a red letter day in more ways than one for the Edinburgh Academy. Not only was it the official opening of the new Science Centre at Henderson Row, but it was the Junior School's first ever Bonfire Night. I am glad to report that it was an overwhelming success, with over 500 attending, making it a great community event.
Children enjoyed a variety of seasonal activities, which had been masterminded by Mrs Tia Miller; food was provided by Ms Donaldson and her team;  the bonfire and fireworks organised by our resident pyrotechnic, Mr Paxton, and many Junior School staff acted as marshals, easily identifiable in their fetching  fluorescent yellow.  It was a great team effort. We were blessed with good weather this time but, come rain or shine, we just might be persuaded to run the event again next year - watch this space!
I am glad to report there was no evidence of weary legs on Saturday morning as the three rugby teams all recorded comprehensive victories. Well done to both players and coaches.
Caroline Bashford, Headteacher

Physics Trip

On the 31st October a group of Sixths went to Merchiston Castle school to listen to a lecture called 'Light Fantastic' about revolutionary research into the shortest event ever created in the Universe and see how they will play a pivotal role in the future of biology, medicine and internet communications. It was enjoyed by everyone and fitted well with the Physics AS-level syllabus.

IN THE NEWS

It is the football season and there have been a fair number of mentions for a fair number of Academicals over the past month or two. The last couple of In the News columns have had a paucity of rugby reports, so now is the time to put things to right.

Way back in September, Mike Blair (86-99), Ross Rennie (91-04) and Phil Godman (90-95) had mentions in the Scotsman after playing for Edinburgh against Connacht. The game finished as a 22-22 draw despite the Edinburgh team being reduced to twelve men at one stage. Ross was one of those at whom the referee was "flourishing his yellow card with gay abandon", according to the report.

In the middle of last month Mike and Phil were back in Ireland, this time with David Callam (87-91) in a match against Limerick, a game that the away-side won, 10-21. The Scotsman report was accompanied by a fine picture of scrum-half Mike, passing the ball out of a ruck. On the same page, a report on the Glasgow game against Neath-Swansea Ospreys mentioned Donnie Macfadyen (84-97) substituting for John Barclay and Andrew Wilson.

Last week‘s Scotsman had a piece on the decisions that new Edinburgh coach Lynn Howells has to make. This featured Ross Rennie (91-04) again, of whom Howells said, "He has put the performances in at the beginning of the season; he‘s been consistent and his professional attitude has impressed me since I came here."
And in the Sunday Post this weekend there was a similar article on the decisions having to be made by Frank Hadden, the Scotland coach. According to columnist, David Sole, Hadden needs "a fly-half who can dictate the shape and pace of the game" and should consider Phil Godman: "I believe he shows the most potential at the moment." David played for Accies and was captain of Scotland when the team won the Grand Slam in 1990.

We hope to read more of these gentlemen over the coming weeks during the Scotland and Scotland A internationals.

Rugby Results

P6 v Hutcheson's: Firsts Won 8-1, Seconds Won 7-1.
P6 v Watson's: Thirds Won 7-4.

An excellent morning's rugby from all boys which included some really effective passing and strong tackling.

v Cargilfield: Firsts Lost 4-1, Seconds Won 7-3
The firsts played a hard physical game at Cargilfield and showed real courage and determination to stay at 1-1 at half time. The team fought gallantly all the way even when luck played a part as the boys crossed the opposition goal line three times without success.
The seconds, playing at home, used an expansive passing game that was interestingly contrasted against the more direct approach adopted by the opposition and was ultimately more successful as the boys ran in seven fine tries.
Keep up the good work!

SQUASH

U16 v/Fettes (home): Won 20 points to 3
Another comprehensive victory for the newly formed U16 team.
Jamie Macrae (Captain) 3-2, Nick Hunt 3-0, Hector Macneal 3-0, James Munro 3-0, Alex Shedden 3-1.

RUGBY

1st XV v Glasgow Academy: 31-9 Won (Cup)
1st XV v Hutcheson's GS: 57-13 Won

Two very pleasing results for the 1st XV and no lack of good rugby played to entertain our supporters and to put a smile on the coach‘s face. The forwards particularly against Hutcheson's produced a sterling performance with Toby Binnian and Andrew Forbes leading from the front. Outside the powerful Zak Muluzi scored three tries against Glasgow Academy, the speedy Tim Hutchinson two in each game, and Alex Blair in dazzling form four against Hutcheson's Grammar.
However both matches were good team performances and the whole squad can take a great deal of confidence into our next game v Strathallan: 11th November, 2.30pm at New Field. The only disappointing news to report was a another bad knee injury to Tom Macleod after returning for just one game, and confirmation that the luckless Paddy Fulton will be out of action for a very long time.
v Glasgow Academy: Tries - Hutchinson 2, Muluzi 3; Conversions - Blair 3
v Hutcheson's: Tries - Blair 4, Hutchinson 2, Muluzi , Grey, Ragg; Conversions - Blair 4.
