Junior School Rugby

About the sport

Rugby played in schools is usually a version of rugby union, though for youngsters being introduced to the game the numbers of players are reduced and the scoring system modified.

Although popularly supposed to have been "invented" at Rugby School in 1823, in fact versions of the game date back to Ancient Greece; it was the codification of the rules of the modern game that began at Rugby and was spread by the influence of Thomas Arnold on other schools.

EA Junior Rugby

The Edinburgh Academy has from the start been one of the most important schools in the development of Scottish school rugby, with the senior annual match against Merchiston being the longest running continual rugby fixture in the world.

The Junior teams are encouraged to show courage, determination and attacking flair, and all matches are hotly contested making it exciting rugby to watch. The attitude and enthusiasm displayed by the teams are outstanding.

O ur P6 teams finally returned to competitive rugby with 2 away matches against St Aloysius and a home game against Compass. Our first team served up a very exciting game against an unbeaten, forward dominated St Aloysius team who presented many challenges up front. Despite being down 2-1 at half-time, our boys maintained their composure, tackled admirably and began to play a more expansive game which brought 2 excellent tries in the corner. Our third team again showed their potential with an excellent performance against a weakened home team. Our seconds also served up an excellent victory against a side from Compass that they drew with previously. Well done, everyone! Thankyou to all who supported the teams! Two well contested games provided over 30 tries and the boys really enjoyed the fun and learning which took place. U11(1,2) Cargilfield H 3.45pm

On Thursday 8th October, our P6 teams played two well contested matches at home against a strong Cargilfield select. Our boys showed much improved tackling skills and support play which provided a good platform for the backs to attack in the wide areas. Sam Mateer converted all four tries for the firsts with his pace and evasive style of running proving too much to handle on the wing. A much improved team performance. Well done, everyone! Keep up the hard work in training, boys! Thankyou to all who played and supported the matches.

Merchiston H (1,2) Rugby Practice (3,4) 9-10am

On Saturday 31st October, our first and second teams competed at home in two hotly contested games against Merchiston. The firsts, despite losing 2 early tries, came back to 2-1 on the stroke of half-time. Merchiston, however, were really up for this game and their pace and aggression in contact provided them with a further 3 tries, taking a 5-1 lead. However, it was really encouraging to see our boys fight back in the last 5 minutes producing 2 further tries to finish on 5-3. An excellent game of competitive rugby! The seconds also produced a fine game where the running, passing and tackling showed real improvement despite the 3-0 loss. Keep up the effort in training, boys! Thankyou to all who supported the matches and especially to the parents who provided a warm and friendly welcome to all in the dining hall afterwards.
