Investing in sporting and outdoor facilities
Games and physical education foster both individual and team skills, together with personal fitness, perseverance and self-discipline. It is important that excellent facilities are available for sport and outdoor activities. Facilities for rugby, athletics, cricket and tennis are available on the campus or immediately across the road at New Field, the main playing field of the senior School. Year after year, Academy pupils develop fine athletic abilities and skills which complement their achievements in the classroom, in music, in art and in drama. |
Sports hall and all weather pitches
Sadly it does rain quite a lot in Scotland, and grass fields can be too vulnerable to damage in wet conditions. That is why we have invested in extensive all weather facilities to the rear of the school. These pitches allow outdoor sport to go ahead as long as overhead conditions are viable. For the occasions when the weather is inclement we have excellent indoor faciliities in the Academy Sports Centre and in the achool hall. Academy Sports includes a large sports hall that is used for physical education, basketball, netball and other sports. |

RugbyRugby begins in P3 leading to regular matches in P6 plus less frequent competitive outings for Under 10 and an Under 9 side. The top P6 team has an impressive record over many years. Three other P6 sides take the field on a Saturday morning - the majority of the year group can participate in team sports. 7-a-side rugby tournaments are entered annually (including the Junior School's own Under 11 event), several of which have been won in recent years at venues ranging from Edinburgh to Durham and Bradford. |
CricketAs in Rugby, a suitable level of participation for all is sought and this is achieved by the top group in P5 and P6 playing normal cricket, while the remaining groups from P4 - P6 learn the game through Kwik Cricket. The latter leads to matches in P6 for the 2nd and 3rd teams, often with notable success against 1st sides from other schools. With facilities and coaches available, the top groups move on from Kwik Cricket to learning more specialist cricket skills with a hard ball and play 'proper cricket' matches. |

NetballNetball was also introduced to the Junior School in 2007 but, as with hockey, our objective is to follow the same sporting principles as before. Last year the girls’ netball club enjoyed a busy season with the highlights being the tournament in the first term at Meadowbank and the tournament at Firrhill High School in term two. Practice night was well attended with the numbers increasing steadily all year. The girls played in all positions and improved their skills in passing, shooting and positional play. The sessions were most enjoyable and we look forward to entering more tournaments |
HockeyHockey was introduced to the Junior School in 2006-7 just before the advent of co-education, but it is already well established in the Senior School. The photo shows hockey on the new all weather pitch behind the school. Last year the hockey club started with 14 girls and by the end of the second term the numbers had risen to 28! Matches were organised for P5 and 6 girls |
