Junior School Hockey

About the sport

Hockey is played on a variety of surfaces, natural and artificial, and between teams of eleven. Since it involves sticks and a hard ball, emphasis is placed on safety.

Players may hit, push, flick or scoop the ball using their sticks. The objective is to score a goal in the opponents' net; scoring strokes must originate within the half circle surrounding each goal. Goalkeepers have additional protective equipment.

EA Junior Hockey

A primary 3-6 hockey club was started in 2008. Matches are organised for P5 and 6 girls and P6 boys.

There are also end of term division tournaments.

The new junior school astroturf pitch provides an excellent venue for everyone to enjoy hockey competitions.

Monday 15th March

Our P6 boys hockey team played two 7 a-side matches at Loretto. It was fantastic to see such an improvement in all areas of the game and also the excellent attitude and commitment. The boys were rewarded with two fine 3-0 wins! Well done, everyone! Keep up the hard work in training!

Thursday 4th March

Our P6 boy’s hockey team played their second competitive match against a mixed Clifton Hall team. The boys gave their all in an excellent match where there was end to end excitement. The teams positioning, passing, tackling and shooting skills all showed improvement with some excellent interplay around the ‘D’ leading to some fine scores. Well done, everyone! Keep up the hard work in practice!

Tuesday 2nd March

The primary six girls’ hockey team played against Belhaven Hill. The girls played with skill and determination and had a fine shot at goal saved by the Goal Keeper. There was a big improvement in the passing skills and the girls communicated well with each other on the pitch. The team were unlucky to be 0-2 down at half time. In the second half Belhaven Hill stepped up the pace and Catriona Stokes made some great saves as Goal Keeper. The Edinburgh Academy Girls now need to work on their attacking play in the final quarter of the pitch. The full time score was 4-0 to Belhaven Hill.

Wednesday 24th February

The P6 girls’ hockey team played away to Cargilfield. Due to the wet weather the match was played indoors and this was a new experience for The Edinburgh Academy girls as the ball could be played off the side walls. The girls took a little while to get used to the fast surface and different style of play. Despite some good tackling the girls found it hard to link passes and the final score was 0-5 to Cargilfield.

In the next match the combined team of primary five and six girls, having watched the previous match, played with real determination and were 2-0 up at half time. Despite some great passing play they allowed Cargilfield to equalise and with the score tied at 3-3 Cargilfield scored on the final whistle to win 4-3. This was a close match and a new experience for all the girls.

Thank you to all the parents who came along to support the players.

Saturday 6th Feb

A combined P5/6 team took on George Watson’s College P6C team. The girls played very well, particularly in defence, as the older team had the upper hand in the first half. In the second half the girls started to attack and scored a great goal. The final score was 3-1 to George Watson’s College.

The P6 team played George Watson’s College P6 team.  During the first half Watson’s scored a good goal early on and carried on scoring.  Edinburgh Academy fought back hard making the score Watson’s 3 and Academy 2 at half time.  During the second half Edinburgh Academy scored their third goal early on.  Watson’s had a lot of close shots several bouncing off the post.  During the last seven minutes Academy scored their fourth and final goal after many attempts to get the ball up to their end and having it tackled or bouncing off the posts.  The defence were very strong in both teams and the midfields and strikers had some great breaks up the pitch.  It was a very good game played by all.  The final score was 4-3 to Edinburgh Academy.

Saturday 23rd January 2010

Two Edinburgh Academy U11 teams played away to The Mary Erskine School. The standard of the Mary Erskine teams was very strong and the Academy girls worked hard in defence to keep the score line down. Several of the girls rose to the occasion and tackled valiantly to the end of the match.

The U10 Girls Hockey Teams played Compass on The Junior School Astroturf, on this chilly morning again several of the Edinburgh Academy girls displayed great defensive skills and worked tirelessly throughout the match. We now need to work on our attacking play and we will do this at Thursday practice. Thank you to Alex Hunt and Alex Ramsay for their help with umpiring and subbing.

P6 / U10 teams away v Compass 7th November

P6 - They had a great match and were working very hard at their spacing and showed some great skills. They managed to score an excellent goal. The teams were a good even match even with some primary 7’s playing for Compass. Next time we will be working at passing to a player so we do not lose possession of the ball. Final Score Edinburgh Academy 1 – Compass 4

U10 - This was the girls’ first experience of competitive hockey. Two mixed ability teams took on an A and B team from Compass. The girls quickly got used to the fast Astroturf surface and worked well with some good defending and strong passing. The results were:

EA Red team v Compass A 0-3
EA Blue Team v Compass B 3-0
EA Blue Team v Compass A 0-3
EA Red Team v Compass B 2-2

This was a great morning of hockey and thanks to all the parents for coming along to support the teams.

P6 v Fettes away 31 Oct

The girls were starting to play more as a team and were looking to see who they were going to pass to.  They had some great breaks up the pitch but unfortunately did not manage to score any goals.  We still need to work on our spacing, making sure we use the whole pitch. Final Score Fettes 9 – Edinburgh Academy 0

P6 v Craigclowan School 26th September

Primary 6 Hockey Team played Craigclowan Prep School. They played a round robin tournament against their A and B teams. There first game was against the A team and the girls were given a lesson on using the space on the pitch and staying in their positions. The girls were very determined and working well together. Final score 0 - 6. They then played the B team and started using the space and started to get some great breaks up the pitch and some good shots at goal. They were showing good competitive spirit. Final score 0 - 1.
