Scottish Prep School Championships 2008

Belhaven School again hosted this event in windswept John Muir Park in Dunbar last Sunday afternoon.

We fielded an U 12 and an U 10 team. The U 12s faced stiff opposition from several teams, most notably Belhaven, who cleaned up all the individual medals. Positions were as follows: 20th – Jamie Troup; 29th – Charlie Hunter; 30th – Ruairidh Mackay; 34th – Peter Ning and 42nd - James Carrie.

The U 10s were fairly evenly spaced in the upper half of the field, with strong performances by Callum Woodward in the bronze medal position and Henry Hunter not far behind him in 6th place. In a team event like this it is the determination of all the runners to continue fighting for position, even when they are no longer in the leading group, that can bring success. So it turned out on Sunday. With Archie Hodgson in 12th, Lorne Scott-Dempster in 13th, Christopher Jackson in 15th and Ryan Welsh in 25th place, the overall performance was good enough to bring back the U 10 trophy for the second year running. Well done to all competitors for this achievement!

Scottish Championship 2008

The P6 team, competing in a total field of around 2000 runners, ran a fantastic race on a mildly undulating course over 1 mile. In the boys’ race, Melvin-Farr led the team out from the front after a fast start and stayed in touch with the leading runners throughout the race to finish in an excellent 5th place, in a new personal best time of 7.05m. He was followed in by Gilmour (52nd), Ning (57th), Troup (69th) and Kinghorn (116th). The boys showed a real fighting spirit right to the end, overtaking others in a sprint finish. The girls’ race saw Berkmiller and Zaidi lead from the front, and they again showed a real strength of character and good running style to finish in 25th and 91st place respectively. A brilliant effort by all. Well done and thank you to all who supported the team.

Other Races

EA P5/6 Cross Country Championship 2008

On a marvellous day for running, 96 boys and girls from P5 and P6 contested within a differentiated race for individual medals and the Division Cup won by Kinross last year. All runners made a choice to compete in the long (3.7km) or short (2km) course i.e. 1 or 2 laps of Inverleith Park. All competitors ran brilliantly, showing good technique and intelligent pacing to provide the spectators with exciting finishes to all the races. The support of all the runners was excellent. A magnificent achievement by all! Well done, everyone! Thank you to all who participated and who supported this hugely enjoyable and successful event.
