Education is a journey - in and out of the classroom
The aims of primary schooling
In the primary years we do not measure educational success by examination statistics or by the destinations of leavers. We judge our work by whether we have discovered and nurtured the talents of each individual child to the highest possible level, and by whether we have helped the individual to see himself or herself as a valuable member of a community, with a unique contribution to make. The development of the children is guided by committed teachers who swiftly but carefully identify the potential of each. |
Specialist primary teachers
It is important that children are taught by specialist primary teachers, such as those of The Edinburgh Academy. Primary school teaching is not a poor relation of secondary school teaching, but an expertise in its own right. A primary school specialist needs a greater understanding of a child's psychology and emerging rationality rather than extensive subject knowledge. It is an essential feature of The Edinburgh Academy that each child is encouraged to achieve according to his ability. This requires a professional approach and personal attention from specialist primary teachers. |

Asking the best of each child
From the beginning we ask the best from each child. Each child will discover his or her own strengths. Each child will grow in ambition and in confidence. The love of learning that can be awoken in these early years is a lifelong asset that endures long after schooldays have been left behind. Around the world distinguished former pupils of The Academy look back on their years here with fond memories of a youth well spent and important lessons in life well learnt. |
Building balanced personalities
Although academic excellence is important, a rounded personality is not built entirely within the confines of the classroom. Academic talents flourish best in the context of a balanced personality. Talents that find their best expression outside the classroom may nevertheless help to sustain progress within it. At the same time the same children are achieving just as prominently in the classroom, in the concert hall and in the art room. |

Learning by doing
Junior School children at the Academy have many wonderful opportunities to learn, not just from their teachers but through their own contributions. Drama, art, singing and instrumental music are important elements of the school’s programme, and each pupil is strongly encouraged to befully involved. These opportunities are not restricted to elite performers; we invite all to participate, for all can learn from and enjoy their experience. |
Outside the classroom
If you think everything happens between 8.40am and 3.30pm then think again. From 8.00 a.m. Early Birds is a hive of activity and fun. A full programme of afternoon activities offers an opportunity for pupils to broaden their range of interests. Children and staff see expeditions as an opportunity to develop relationships in a different context. Residential trips and expeditions give children in the older years the experience of working as a team, tackling tasks through negotiation and collaboration. |
