personally tailored teaching

Why a small school?

The early years of education are the years in which a child learns fastest and in which a child's individual personality emerges. At home a young child receives individual attention from his or her parents, but often it is a very different story in large classes at primary school.

The Edinburgh Academy Junior School is dedicated to the principle of personally tailored teaching. This means that from the start your child is treated as an individual with unique needs and unique talents.

Why small classes?

It is important that children are taught in small classes. To be seen as an individual a child must not be crowded with many others in a large class where his share of the teacher's attention is only a few minutes per day. For a child to develop an inquiring mind, her teacher needs to be able to respond when she wants to ask a question.

Primary education is the vital stage when children learn solid values and basic skills that will set them on the road to a good education. Teachers cannot devote enough attention to individual needs if they are trying to cope with large numbers of children at once. The Edinburgh Academy has small classes.

Why specialist teachers?

The development of the children is guided by committed teachers who swiftly but carefully identify the potential of each. It is an essential feature of The Edinburgh Academy that each child is encouraged to achieve according to his ability. This requires a professional approach and personal attention from specialist primary teachers.

It is important that children are taught by specialist primary teachers, such as those of The Edinburgh Academy. Primary school teaching is not a poor relation of secondary school teaching, but an expertise in its own right. A primary school specialist needs a greater understanding of a child's psychology and emerging rationality rather than extensive subject knowledge.

What do our new girls say?

"Edinburgh Academy is great! I wasn’t sure about going to a school with so many boys but the boys have all been great fun. I’ve tried lots of new sports like touch rugby and hockey. I like all my new teachers and enjoy all of my new subjects. I think that the Science and Art room are fab! I can’t imagine being anywhere else now. Edinburgh Academy is my school."

"I was very nervous but excited about starting at the Edinburgh Academy. Having been at an all girls school I wasn’t sure how the boys would treat me. The boys have all been really friendly and kind. I have made lots of new friends. Although you have to take school lunches, I have enjoyed baked potatoes and cheese and fish and chips on a Friday!"

Education is a journey - in and out of the classroom

Asking the best

from the beginningFrom the beginning we ask the best from each child. Each child will discover his or her own strengths. Each child will grow in ambition and in confidence. The love of learning that can be awoken in these early years is a lifelong asset that endures long after schooldays have been left behind.

Around the world distinguished former pupils of The Academy look back on their years here with fond memories of a youth well spent and important lessons in life well learnt.

Balanced personalities

Academic talents flourish best in the context of a balanced personality. Talents that find their best expression outside the classroom may nevertheless help to sustain progress within it.

At the same time the same children are achieving just as prominently in the classroom, in the concert hall and in the art room.

Sport

hockeyOn the sporting front, we work to foster individual and team skills, alongside fitness, perseverance and self-discipline. Year after year of Academy children develop fine athletic skills. This busy approach is the sound, broad base for later years.

Games and physical education foster both individual and team skills, together with personal fitness, perseverance and self-discipline. Year after year, Academy pupils develop fine athletic abilities and skills which complement their achievements in the classroom, in music, in art and in drama.

Learning by doing

dramaJunior School children at the Academy have many wonderful opportunities to learn, not just from their teachers but through their own contributions.

Drama, art, singing and instrumental music are important elements of the school’s programme, and each pupil is strongly encouraged to be fully involved.

These opportunities are not restricted to elite performers; we invite all to participate, for all can learn from and enjoy their experience.

Further Afield

self relianceResidential trips and expeditions give children in the older years the experience of working as a team, tackling tasks through negotiation and collaboration.

Extra-curricular activities

chessA full programme of afternoon activities - for example cookery, woodwork, photography, basketball, origami - offers an opportunity for pupils to broaden their range of interests.
