A spacious campus

Since the early 1960s,  The Edinburgh Academy Junior School has had its own separate campus in the leafy northern suburbs of Edinburgh,  right next to the world famous Royal Botanic Gardens.

Few Edinburgh primary school children are able to enjoy such wonderful play areas, surrounded by trees and grass, which in turn can become an outdoor classroom of enviable proportions.

The Denham Green building was purpose built as a nursery, not converted. More new building has recently been completed and still more is planned as we pursue our ambition to provide excellence in personally tailored teaching.

The Junior School classrooms are bright, airy and afford ample opportunity for practical activity. From its well-equipped science lab and computing suite to its art studio and drama room, The Edinburgh Academy Junior School's classroom facilities are excellent. With the Edinburgh Academy Sports Centre on our campus and the magnificent playing fields, children can be playing sport within minutes of leaving the classroom. No time is wasted in an action packed day - which is the norm at The Edinburgh Academy Junior School.

We welcome parents who would like to look round. Please contact .

Features

Sports on the doorstep

Edinburgh Academy Sports CentreThe Sports Centre includes a large and versatile sports hall, suitable for a number of different types of activities. Some of our most popular are badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, mini-tennis, netball, tennis and volleyball. There is also a gymnasium equipped with fitness machines, as well as squash and tennis courts.

Play and games

adventure playgroundThe extensive campus  has three rugby pitches, a cricket square, changing rooms,  and three large playgrounds.

Immediately across the road from The Junior School campus are the Senior School playing fields (Newfield), giving Junior School boys access to huge amounts of open space.

Purpose built nursery

Denham GreenThe Denham Green Nursery (1989) is a modern purpose built addition to our facilities. A "safe surface" adventure play area at the Denham Green Nursery was completed in 1999.

A brand new nursery and after school care building is nearing completion in 2008.

New buildings

Harvey BuildingThe new Art and Science rooms at the Junior School were completed in 1999. Computing and IT facilities were greatly enhanced in 2003. In 2005 a new extension to the P6 block was constructed with more computer facilities. A new Music Room and Library were fitted out.

Room to breathe

This picture shows the Sports Centre and the Arboretum playing fields to the south of the main building and the back field to the north. The fields are overlooked by Academy House,  residence of the Rector.

Edinburgh Academy: Eco- school!

wildlife gardenThe Edinburgh Academy Junior School has adopted the eco-schools programme (see right hand panel.). By following the programme, our school will become a more stimulating place in which to learn and we will reduce the environmental impact of the whole school on the community.

We are working on a super Wildlife Garden (left). We have drawn up a simple plan and are directly involving the children as much as possible.
