The Junior School Prospectus - Our schoolEA logo

girls and boys in class

A small school

We have around 400 pupils, including:

Our nursery

90 boys and girls aged 2 - 4½ years.  A brand new nursery building is opening on the campus in 2008. Nursery Teacher:Pupil ratio is 1-8 for 3-5 years and 1-5 for 2 years old.

The Junior School itself

About 315 children.  We are very strongly of the belief that our compact size is the great strength of the school.

The school is large enough to offer a wide range of opportunities in many areas to our pupils, yet we are small enough for all the children become well known as people in their own right by all members of staff.  The children feel that they belong to an intimate and supportive community.

Small classes

Unlike some other schools The Academy Junior School does not add full classes of new pupils further up the school.  This means that new children joining the school at points other than Primary 1 year will fill in gaps which exist within current classes. Maximum class size is limited to 20 P1-4 and 22 P5 and 6. We have an overall teacher:pupil ratio of around 13 to 1, or under 9 to 1 if visiting teachers are included.

Our staff have all chosen to work in the primary sector and therefore are committed to delivering their own speciality to younger children.

Building on strengths

Moving forward

learningAs each girl or boy continues the journey through the Junior School, each is able to move forward at the right pace, growing steadily in independence and in eagerness to question and to learn.

P5 & P6

personal attentionIn the upper years of the Junior School, new tasks bring new levels of expectation. Personal attention from committed teachers identifies the abilities of each pupil. Each can then be supported and encouraged to make full use of those abilities.

New & Old

computingNew technologies give the pupils new opportunities for discovery.

However, traditional learning remains important, in order that sound knowledge and the ability to persevere can be developed even from an early stage. It is a mistake to become reliant upon machines at the expense of intellectual development.

Our website

junior school websiteAs you can see, The Junior School has its own website with sections dealing with its curriculum and extra-curricular activities, information, sport, after school care and nursery education. We hope that our website will answer many of your questions.  In particular, you might like to consult the Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, because we are part of a single all age school, we share website sections with the senior school, including news and admissions.

HeadteacherThis is a friendly place with friendly people.

We hope that nobody would hesitate to approach us, and we want to extend a special invitation to all who may be considering an independent school for the first time.
