Introduction
So far the Junior School Website has told you quite a lot about what children learn in class and a little about sport but not too much about the thousand and one other things that go on and that really make us the flourishing little community that we are. We thought that it was about time to put that right, so we have created this new information section and we are going to build it up as fast as we can with lots and lots of ... well, information!
Tradition and Change
Like any living thing a school community changes. The Edinburgh Academy Junior School is obviously not as it was when it was founded in the late nineteenth century, nor would it be expected that it should be. We are not even as we were when the present building was constructed in 1960.
In 2007 we changed even more when we became fully co-educational. So, if you have preconceptions of the school based on hearsay, or even if you are a former pupil who experienced an Edinburgh Academy education a generation ago, you will probably find that the school is not what you expect. We trust however that you will find us to have preserved what is most valuable of the old at the same time as we have enthusiastically adopted what is good of the new.
The Junior School's new information section aims to help you build up a picture of the school as more than just a collection of classrooms. People are the lifeblood of a school; children, teachers, parents, coaches, visiting speakers - all of us have to give of our best to make this community succeed.
How to find us
Edinburgh city centre

Edinburgh Street MapThe street map shows northern Edinburgh, known as "The New Town" because of its deliberate construction beginning in the late eighteenth century as an escape from the huddled tenements of the castle rock. By car the Junior School is probably best approached from the north along Ferry Road and the Senior School from Inverleith Row. The Princes Street area is best avoided at peak traffic times. |
Railway connections
|
Edinburgh is well served by commuter rail services. The Senior School is 15-20 minutes walk from Waverley Station. Both Junior and Senior Schools can be reached from the station by bus. Air TransportInternational and domestic flights are available from Edinburgh (Turnhouse) Airport. The Airport is located just to the west of Edinburgh close to the junction of the motorways and the city bypass. Regular shuttle buses run between the airport and the city centre and taxis are also available. A rail link between the airport and the city is under consideration. |
