Edinburgh Academy

The Support for Learning Department is centrally located within the school so that it is readily accessible to pupils, staff and parents. There are two part time members of staff who are qualified to provide additional support for learning.
The department, in conjunction with the class teacher, monitors every child’s academic and emotional development as he or she progresses through the school. Many children, from the very gifted to those with specific learning difficulties, benefit from additional support, which may be needed for only a few weeks or for a longer extended period.
On entry to the school in P1 all children are given a Baseline Assessment and Focus Groups are created for reinforcement of the teaching of phonics and reading for those children identified as likely to benefit from additional support.
At the end of P1 the children are re assessed. Those who will benefit, will have the opportunity of participating in the Primary 2 Intensive Reading Programme.
From P2 – P6 all children are screened at the beginning of each academic year for Spelling, English and Maths and this is useful in identifying children with strengths and those with specific difficulties in these areas. Staff or parents can also refer pupils to the Support for Learning Department for assessment. Over the years we build up a very detailed profile of the child.
Programmes of supportOnce any particular needs are identified a programme of support is planned. Support may include individual or small group tuition, liaison with staff and team teaching. Referral to specialists may be suggested and pupils can be assessed by an educational psychologist who works regularly with the school. Additional Support for Learning can be timetabled instead of Music in P4, 5 or 6, after consultation with parents. |
Co-operation with other teachersThe Support for Learning staff team teach in most classes and all class teachers and specialists are informed about the strengths and difficulties of any pupil with additional needs and advised on how to support the pupils in class. Pupils are strongly advised to develop computer skills and time for this may be provided during individual or Focus Group sessions. |
