Our children will no longer only compete with their UK counterparts for the top jobs. Their European equivalents regard fluent English as self-evident and often speak several other languages as well. The era of monolingualism is well and truly gone and our children must be equipped to compete in a job market where both geographical mobility and the knowledge of at least one other European language are indispensable.
French is taught in the Junior School to both Primary 5 and Primary 6.
The children receive 1 period of French per week , although there are opportunities to reinforce some basic French vocabulary through normal classroom routines.
The course used is the SKOLDO Primary Teaching Course. This is a course that is specifically designed for the teaching of Modern Languages in a primary school setting. The children find it an enjoyable, light hearted and interesting way of being introduced to the language.
During the course of their Primary 5 programme the children learn the basics of the French language in a mostly verbal fashion.

Liaison with the seniorsThe Head of Modern Languages at the Senior School is actively involved in ensuring that the programme of study at the Junior School prepares children properly for entry to to the Senior School and for the French teaching they will receive thereafter. Since members of the Senior School Modern Languages staff are actively involved in the teaching, a continuing dialogue is maintained to ensure that the standard of French learned within the Junior School is of a consistently high standard. |
