Applied creativity

'Every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up'
Pablo Picasso

Art in the junior school provides the opportunity for every child to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas about themselves and their environment through creativity. It is our aim to provide the children with the confidence and skills they need to do this.

Art and design is experiential in nature and therefore generally concerned with knowledge gained by doing. The children are encouraged to explore their own creativity through a variety of media and are able to produce work of a very high standard right from primary one. It is very exciting to see the children meeting the challenges of art and design, proud of what they can make and consequently growing in confidence.

Innovation

Now design technology has been introduced to the art curriculum giving the children the opportunity to make models that work! Design technology introduces the challenges of problem solving through design and teaches the children to be more aware of the application of knowledge they have gained in other subjects, such as science, to the creative process. (See the story of the erupting volcano in the right panel.)

It is my aim in the art room to provide a stimulating environment where the children can develop and enjoy using their creative and imaginative skills, free of the fear of failure, with confidence and enthusiasm.

The Art Curriculum

The children are introduced to the use of a wide variety of different media. Work is planned for them that often involves the combination of several techniques or media. This can result in some striking works being produced.

The slide show on the left illustrates some of the remarkable achievements of the children.

A child's account of Volcano Making!

Class P4B made volcanoes out of mod-roc in our art lessons. The first step was to sellotape a plastic bottle to a piece of cardboard. The second step was to sellotape newspaper to the plastic bottle, fatter at the bottom and skinnier at the top. The third step was to stick white mod-roc (with a dribble of water over it) onto the newspaper. Then the mod-roc was left to harden. The fourth step was to paint the volcano with warm colours. Then we left it to dry.

After about a week we went outside with our volcanoes. We put bicarbonated soda and vinegar in the volcanoes. This produced a chemical reaction. IT WORKED. THE VOLCANO ERUPTED! My favourite part was making the volcano erupt
