Edinburgh Academy
educating the individual
We treat all our pupils the same way - individually!
Your child is very special to you. You want your child to be special at school as well as at home. That's where the Edinburgh Academy Junior School can help. The Edinburgh Academy is a small school with small class sizes. Here your child is an individual, not lost in the crowd.
What makes your child an individual? Unique talents, unique needs, unique ambitions. Your child needs a school that is equipped to provide personally tailored teaching to suit the needs of the individual child. He or she must be encouraged by personal commitment and by example to develop these unique talents; to be keen to learn, to participate and to contribute in his or her own way to the community. In large schools with large classes individuality can be overwhelmed; in a small school with small classes it is nourished.
Co-education approaches its second year
The Edinburgh Academy Junior School, an independent Edinburgh primary school, traditionally offered its superlative service only to boys. Now however girls too can benefit from personally tailored teaching. Since August 2007 The Junior School has been fully co-educational, and this has proved extremely popular with parents; numbers of girls rising to 53 during the year. For 2008-9 The Edinburgh Academy Nursery already has its full complement of 90
pupils.
With 48 boys and 12 girls Primary 1 will also be full, and a new class has had to be created in Primary 4 to
accommodate the extra demand at that level.
What do our new girls say?
"Edinburgh Academy is great! I wasn’t sure about going to a school with so many boys but the boys have all been great fun. I’ve tried lots of new sports like touch rugby and hockey. I like all my new teachers and enjoy all of my new subjects. I think that the Science and Art room are fab! I can’t imagine being anywhere else now. Edinburgh Academy is my school."
"I was very nervous but excited about starting at the Edinburgh Academy. Having been at an all girls school I wasn’t sure how the boys would treat me. The boys have all been really friendly and kind. I have made lots of new friends. Although you have to take school lunches, I have enjoyed baked potatoes and cheese and fish and chips on a Friday!"
And "old" boys?
"I think that the school is even better now; it is fun to play with girls and boys."
So, whether you are looking for an Edinburgh nursery, an Edinburgh boys primary school, or an Edinburgh girls primary school, this small, versatile and historic school should now be your first choice. Not mass produced education but personally tailored teaching.
What makes The Edinburgh Academy different?
A small school with small classes
It is small classes and a high staffing ratio that make individual attention and personally tailored teaching possible. To be seen as an individual a child must not be crowded with many others in a large class where his share of the teacher's attention is only a few minutes per day.
For a child to develop an inquiring mind, her teacher needs to be able to respond when she wants to ask a question. The Edinburgh Academy has small classes. Amongst independent Edinburgh primary schools, The Edinburgh Academy offers something special. |
Out of class activities & after school care
From 8am, Early Birds is a hive of activity and fun, to such an extent that some children are nagging parents to get up earlier so they can go to school for Early Birds!
When classes end, the activities begin. From Art to Judo, Cookery to Spanish, throughout the school staff and children get a wonderful chance to enjoy each other’s company in a fun and social atmosphere. At the Edinburgh Academy Junior School you can, if you choose, have your child looked after from 8am till 6pm every day throughout the year with only a few exceptions. |
Good teachers & differentiated learning
Here at The Edinburgh Academy Junior School, we retain sound educational practice but we have also embraced change. Good primary school teaching methods encourage children to take an active responsibility for their own learning.
Personally tailored teaching means delivering a variety of modes of learning; kinaesthetic learning, visual learning and auditory learning, in order that the needs of the individual may be effectively met. The Edinburgh Academy Junior School teachers are highly qualified and committed, successfully communicating their enthusiasm to the children and making learning fun! |
Flexible nursery care
In Edinburgh nursery care can be difficult to find. Edinburgh nurseries are not all the same. Care nurseries do not include nursery teaching. The Edinburgh Academy Nursery is a nursery school.
That means it has fully qualified and expert nursery teaching staff, providing a gentle introduction to learning for children aged two and above and offering flexible timings to suit the needs of parents. The reputation of Edinburgh Academy guarantees your peace of mind. And which other Edinburgh nursery schools offer the option of 2-5 mornings per week for 2 year olds, and 5 mornings or 5 full days for 3-5 year olds? |
A spacious campus
The Edinburgh Academy Junior School is blessed with a huge amount of space. Few Edinburgh primary school children are able to enjoy such wonderful play areas, surrounded by trees and grass which in turn become an outdoor classroom of enviable proportions.
And with the Edinburgh Academy Sports Centre and the magnificent playing fields actually on our campus, children can be playing games within minutes of leaving the classroom. No time is wasted in an action packed day - which is the norm at The Edinburgh Academy Junior School. |
Preparatory for the Senior School
The terms private school and prep school have gone out of fashion nowadays. We tend to speak of independent schools rather than private schools, and primary schools rather than prep schools. However The Edinburgh Academy Junior School is still a preparatory school (or prep school) for The Edinburgh Academy.
Offering a uniquely flexible combination of the Scottish and English secondary curriculum and with an outstanding examination record, our senior school is also a small school with small co-educational classes, offering personally tailored teaching. |
