Some basic questions

How to find us

Edinburgh Academy mapTo experience our Open Day for yourself of course you need to know where we are, and so this section of our website includes maps in various degrees of detail. Please follow the "How to find us" links at the top right.

We also include information about the city of Edinburgh for the benefit of those who are not local residents.

Flexible curriculum

Edinburgh Academy girlNowhere else amongst Scottish independent schools will you find so flexible a curriculum. A secondary school curriculum cannot be one size fits all if the school is to develop unique individual talent. The Edinburgh Academy's teaching programme evolves with the needs of our pupils. Our expert advisers take care to ensure that pupils follow the programme that is right for them. Come to our school open day and discuss with them the sort of programme that would suit your child.

Why personally tailored teaching?

personally tailored teachingYou don't have an off the peg child. Why settle for off the peg education? Your child has unique talents, unique needs and unique ambitions. Your child needs a school that not only recognises that uniqueness but is equipped to tailor make his or her education. That's where the Edinburgh Academy comes in. Your child is special to us. The Edinburgh Academy is a small school with small class sizes. In The Edinburgh Academy every child is an individual, never a number.

Highers and A Levels

Edinburgh Academy boyOffering both Scottish and English examinations, The Edinburgh Academy is easily able to assimilate newcomers to Edinburgh. Boys and girls from a variety of educational backgrounds, in Scotland, England or overseas, come here to be prepared for university entrance. Our normal pattern of examinations is GCSE at age 15+, Higher Grade at 16+ and A Level at 17+. Come to our school open day and see how we can design an academic programme to suit your child.

Personally tailored teaching needs small classes

personally tailored teachingSmall classes and a high staffing ratio make individual attention possible.

To be seen as an individual a child must not be crowded with many others in a large class where his share of the teacher's attention is only a few minutes per day. For a child to develop an inquiring mind, her teacher needs to be available when she wants to ask a question. The Edinburgh Academy has small classes and thus is able to provide personally tailored teaching.

People not buildings

personally tailored teachingIn our school open day we aim to show you just why The Edinburgh Academy is different. The usual problem with school open days is that you wander round buildings or watch staged activities. The point is, of course, that good buildings do not make a good school. What does make a good school is small classes with good teachers. That is why The Edinburgh Academy Open Day gathers together teachers for you to talk to. You know a good teacher when you talk to one, not when you look round a classroom.

Scholarships

scholarshipsAt the Edinburgh Academy we nurture young talent. Every year The Edinburgh Academy is delighted to offer a number of external scholarships to help children achieve their highest potential.

Whether you are a budding academic, an aspiring artist, an outstanding sportsman or a talented musician, The Edinburgh Academy’s scholarships have something to offer you.

Academy scholarships are designed to reward excellence by enabling pupils to attend the Academy who would not otherwise be able to do so. In appropriate cases up to 100% of tuition fees may be covered by scholarships and bursaries. (In addition to a basic scholarship of up to 25% of the tuition fees, additional bursaries are available where parental means would otherwise be insufficient to meet the balance of the fees.)

Life outside the classroom

outside class - Edinburgh Academy expeditionsIt used to be thought that the business of education was academic and that all such teaching took place in the classroom. Both of these assumptions are wrong.

Certainly academic education is important in a school, but increasingly we find valuable academic educational benefit in field trips and expeditions, in public performances, in research projects or practical projects in the community and in interaction with visiting experts.

It is important to realise that an academic education alone is not a complete education. Knowledge is not necessarily wisdom; intelligence is not enough to make a good citizen or a moral person. Striking the right balance between self and society is an art as difficult to learn calculus and no less the responsibility of a school.
