How to find The Academysmall logo

Edinburgh location

Getting to Edinburgh

The capital city of Scotland is served by international air and maritime links and has good motorway connections.

by air

International and domestic flights are available from Edinburgh (Turnhouse) Airport. The Airport is located just to the west of Edinburgh close to the junction of the motorways and the city bypass. Regular shuttle buses run between the airport and the city centre and taxis are also available. A rail link between the airport and the city is under consideration.

by sea

A ferry service runs between Rosyth, opposite Edinburgh on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, and Zeebrugge in Belgium on alternate days. The crossing takes approximately eighteen hours and is provided by Superfast Ferries.

by road

Edinburgh is easily accessible by the A1 from the south and east, M8 from the west, M9 from the north west and M90 from the north. The street map below shows how to approach the school.

The New Town

The street map shows the central part of northern Edinburgh, known as "The New Town" because of its deliberate construction beginning in the late eighteenth century as an escape from the huddled tenements of the castle rock. By car the Junior School is probably best approached from the north along Ferry Road and the Senior School from Inverleith Row. The Princes Street area is best avoided at peak traffic times.

School Buses

The Safer Routes to School Groups at the Edinburgh Academy and St George‘s School have launched a joint bus service bringing pupils in to both schools. Details can be found on the Parents Association pages.

Commuting by Rail

Edinburgh is well served by commuter rail services. Edinburgh Waverley is served by GNER and Virgin Rail routes from London and the south as well as First Scotrail services from within Scotland. The Senior School is 15-20 minutes walk from Waverley Station. Both Junior and Senior Schools can easily be reached from the station by bus.
