About us
Every organisation has its own ways of doing things. Sometimes they can explain why they do things this way, and sometimes there are inexplicable traditions. The Edinburgh Academy's unique end of year Hailes Match is one of the latter.
These idiosyncracies may mark us out as individuals, but they should not act as a barrier to understanding. The purpose of this section of our website is therefore to inform the visitor about all of those things that make the school outside the classroom a living and thriving community.
Change and renewal
Like any living thing a school community changes. The Edinburgh Academy is obviously not as it was when it was founded in 1824, nor would it be expected that it should be. More to the point, if you have preconceptions of the school based on hearsay, or even if you are a former pupil who experienced an Edinburgh Academy education a generation ago, you will find that the school is not now even as it was then.
We trust however that you will find us to have preserved what is most valuable of the old at the same time as we have enthusiastically adopted what is good of the new

Life outside the classroom
Certainly academic education is important in a school, but increasingly we find valuable academic educational benefit in field trips and expeditions, in public performances, in research projects or practical projects in the community and in interaction with visiting experts. It is important to realise that an academic education alone is not a complete education. Knowledge is not necessarily wisdom; intelligence is not enough to make a good citizen or a moral person. Striking the right balance between self and society is an art as difficult to learn calculus and no less the responsibility of a school. |

Uniform sales
The Academy has a second-hand clothing shop which is situated behind the dining hall of the Junior School in Arboretum Road. It is open twice a month during term time on the first Saturday morning, 8.30 am to 11.30 am, and the first Wednesday afternoon, 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, of each month during the term: see the News Sheet. |
Specialised websites
Edinburgh Academy Foundation, our charitable development agency, Edinburgh Academy Enterprises, our merchandising and commercial fund raising operation, Edinburgh Academy Sports Centre, the games and leisure facility that we share with the local community. All of these pages have now been replaced by independent websites that may be accessed by using the links at the top of each page of the site. |

To experience any of these things for yourself of course you need to know where we are, and so this section includes maps in various degrees of detail. It also includes information about the city of Edinburgh for the benefit of those who are not local residents.

It used to be thought that the business of education was academic and that all such teaching took place in the classroom. Both of these assumptions are wrong.
