The race of life

The race of life

How many times have you heard the comment “I had no Careers advice at school” or “We never heard about that option at our school” or “We were never encouraged to do anything other than accountancy”?

At The Academy we blow our trumpet ever so slightly because we have had a long tradition of encouraging students to have a broad outlook, research widely & investigate various career paths. Nicky Campbell that great guru of Radio Five phone-ins amongst other media thrills mentioned on air that the late Bill Stirling, Head of Careers, was a major positive influence upon him here at school.

Departmental expansion

As evidence of the ongoing development of our commitment we have invested recently in the expansion of the departmental team. Led and co-ordinated by Director of Sixth Form Roger Wightman we have Mike Bryce, 4ths/5ths Year Head,  Dougie Bonnyman and John Meadows who each have specific responsibility for Links with Industry, the services, GAP Years and Practice Interviews.

The Careers Department

Facilities

careers libraryWe have expanded our facilities and have developed a new site within the Main School Library.  So much material is available on the Internet that we have made deliberate provision for our students to research Career and University choices via this medium.

Mrs Suzanne Allison has been appointed as our resident Careers Librarian and her presence has been an enormous success in providing on-hand support.

What do we do?

careers adviceStudents are interviewed regularly from the Fourths onwards, and from the Fifths written Careers Reports are sent annually to parents. Contact is maintained on both a formal and informal level. There has been an increased Careers input to the weekly Personal and Social Development classes. Presentations on issues such as interview techniques and C.V. constructions are covered. Major importance is attached to preparation for UCAS applications, and students in the first term of their final year receive individual support from their personal tutor.

Further Support

seminarThere are certain careers areas which require even more detailed support. Medicine, Veterinary Science, Art and Oxbridge are examples. During the summer term we arrange visits to Oxbridge colleges, parents are invited into school for an evening forum with representatives from University Admissions, Faculties and from ISCO with whom we enjoy especially close links. This latter relationship ensures that students benefit from the extensive ISCO services other than Morrisby such as holiday careers experiences. In addition our own Careers staff are available for consultation with parents at any time by arrangement.

Links with EAPFA

interviewA hugely successful departure has been the even closer link with the Parents Association which has led to February/March Careers Conventions.

As well as providing Work Experience contacts and opportunities we involve parents alongside Business representatives in our annual round of Summer Term Practice Interviews for those approaching their last year at school.

The Hugh Forbes Cameron Travel Grant

expediitionAn annual travel grant in memory of Hugh Forbes Cameron has been established in January 2003, following a generous gift received by the school from his widow. The grant will be made to a pupil in the 6ths or 7ths Class, and will make a useful contribution to his or her travel project during the summer holiday or in a gap year immediately after leaving school.

The size of the grant will vary according to the value of the fund, but will be approximately £200. Applications on one sheet of A4 paper should indicate personal details, an outline of the dates and the nature of the project, the likely cost, and the source of other funding. Applications will be particularly welcomed which highlight one or more of the following key features:

  • An expedition to an unusual or remote region
  • A project involving work with people in need or in areas of need
  • A plan which is of significant educational benefit to the pupil
  • A scheme which will benefit the Academy.

The Watt Memorial Trust

building a careerFinancial assistance to past and present members of The Academy and Fettes to enable them "to advance their educational or professional training beyond the point at which public funds or school and university scholarships are available, or when private or family resources alone are not quite adequate for the purpose."

Enquiries and requests for application forms should be made to the secretary, Robert Philp, at 61 Inverleith Place, Edinburgh, EH3 5QD (robertphilp1@aol.com). Closing dates for applications are 1st February for consideration by the Trustees in March, and 1st October for consideration by the Trustees in November. Applications should be submitted to the Rector, who will add his comments and pass the applications to the secretary of the Trust.
