On the left is a panoramic display of the Donaldson's Gardens. The Donaldon's building, like the main building, was built in 1824. It was acquired by The Academy in 1977 and now houses the office of the rector as well as the English, Geography and Art Departments. The playground behind the Donaldson Building is reserved for Geits (First Year). The Mills Suite is located to the right of the Donaldson Building and the Music School to the rear. The Offices of EA Enterprises and EA Foundation are also located here. |

The Donaldson's building, featured in the film "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie", consists of two blocks and an extension to the north. The main building, seen above, stands at the end of attractive lawns, displaying items of sculpture produced in the school. The Rector's office is on the left through the main door, and the reception room is on the right. The basement contains specialist art rooms; geography occupies the rear of the ground floor, and English and Learning support the upper floors.
To the left (west) of the main Donaldson's building is a second block containing the Watt Room (theatre workshop) and Salvesen Room, as well as the office of the Bursar and his staff. The Watt and Salvesen Rooms are the main focus of the Exhibition with which the Academy marks the end of the school year. The Exhibition features a display of art work, other work produced by students, slides and videos of expeditions and activities.
The east wing of Donaldson's is now home to The Edinburgh Academy Foundation Office, as well as to the Mills Suite. The latter has been developed into attractive meeting and reception rooms that can be hired externally when not in use by the school.
The Geits' (The Academy name for first years) classes are all based in the Donaldson's Building, and the yard to the rear of the building, between it and the Music School, is reserved exclusively for their use.
The rear walls of the classrooms on the west side of the main yard form the eastern boundary of the Donaldson's garden. Plaques representing the signs of the Zodiac, produced in the Art Department, are mounted on the wall. On sunny summer days the garden has been known to be used for lessons with small groups as well as for break time relaxation.
Donaldson's has only limited parking for visitors, and it may be necessary upon occasion to park outside the school office in the main school yard.
Left is a ground plan of Donaldson's, which is situated within large gardens both to the front and rear.
