We treat all our pupils the same way - individually!

What makes your child an individual? Unique talents, unique needs, unique ambitions. Your child needs a school that not only recognises this uniqueness but is equipped to provide personally tailored teaching to suit the individual child. Large schools lack this flexibility. The Edinburgh Academy is a small school with small class sizes. Your child is an individual here.

Another requirement of personally tailored teaching is a secondary school curriculum that does not constrain, but identifies and develops individual talent. Combining the English and Scottish examination systems maximises the flexibility of the curriculum. Boys and girls may achieve university entrance qualifications through either Highers or A-Levels.

Scholarships

Every year The Edinburgh Academy offers external scholarships to help gifted children achieve their highest potential. Academic scholarships, art scholarships, music scholarships and sports scholarships are designed to reward excellence by enabling pupils to attend the Academy who would not otherwise be able to do so. Bursaries (financial support) may also be available to pupils whose families may not otherwise be in a position to consider the school. Scholarship applications for 2009-10 are due by Wednesday 14 January 2009

What makes The Edinburgh Academy your best choice?

Small classes for individual attention

Edinburgh schools with small classesIt is small classes and a high staffing ratio that make individual attention and personally tailored teaching possible. To be seen as an individual a child must not be crowded with many others in a large class where his share of the teacher's attention is only a few minutes per day. For a child to develop an inquiring mind, her teacher needs to be able to respond when she wants to ask a question.

Scottish Highers AND English A-Levels

Edinburgh schools with A-Levels, Highers and GCSEThe Edinburgh Academy's teaching programme evolves with the needs of our pupils as we redesign the blocking system and provide Higher and A-Level courses to suit demand. That is part of personally tailored teaching. This means that The Edinburgh Academy can easily cater for newcomers to Edinburgh or to Scotland as well as boys and girls brought up in the Scottish educational system.

The quality of teaching & pastoral care

Edinburgh schools with good teachersPersonally tailored teaching also requires good teachers. Many teachers can teach subjects; good teachers know how to teach boys and girls. Good teachers inspire a child with a love of learning that endures long after specific facts are forgotten. The Edinburgh Academy can provide personally tailored teaching because it has good, well qualified and dedicated teachers.

In addition personal pastoral guidance is provided by class teachers and year heads. At The Edinburgh Academy each boy and girl knows who to turn to for help and advice. That too is part of personally tailored teaching.

Extensive extra-curricular programme

Edinburgh schools with extra-curricular activitiesA distinctive feature of The Edinburgh Academy is the richness of life outside the classroom. The school is famous for its music, art, games, societies and other activities, with boys and girls encouraged to explore their talents in all areas.

Our field centre in the Scottish Highlands provides a base for outdoor activities, whilst cultural or sporting expeditions traverse the globe from China and the Himalayas to The West Indies and South Africa, as well as visiting various UK and European destinations. This extraordinary vitality strongly influences parental choice amongst Edinburgh day schools.

Nursery, primary & secondary coeducation

All age co-educational Edinburgh schoolsBoys and girls can attend The Edinburgh Academy in their nursery, primary and secondary years. The Edinburgh Academy Nursery offers genuine nursery education, not just child care. The Edinburgh Academy Junior School is a first rate primary school, whilst the personally tailored teaching of The Edinburgh Academy itself stands out amongst both Edinburgh boys schools and Edinburgh girls schools.

Examination success

Edinburgh schools with good exam resultsOnce again our A-Level exam results were excellent in 2008. 12 candidates gained 3 or more straight A’s while another 5 gained AAB. At Scottish Higher Grade, our candidates obtained a 77% pass rate, with 31% achieving grade A. At GCSE 17% of presentations gained A* and 48% of all presentations were awarded either A* or A grades. The pass rate was 93%. 2 Chemistry candidates figured in the UK top 10.

Now fully coeducational

The Edinburgh Academy has long been recognised as outstanding amongst Edinburgh boys schools, but you may be surprised to know that our first senior girl was in fact admitted as long ago as 1966. Now the opportunity of this superlative education is extended to girls of all ages.
