A is for absence & activities, B is for Blair House ...
The routines and practices of each school are unique and often confusing. The purpose of this FAQ page is to provide a brief outline of the Academy's activities to you, and to give you easy access to information as the need arises.

As The Rector says below, r emember that the most important sources of information for pupils are still human ones; namely teachers, Ephors (the Academy's prefects) or classmates. If you are in doubt, especially if you are new, please ask.
The printed handbook
All new pupils and all parents receive a handbook explaining how things are done in The Academy. However one thing we know about such handbooks is that they are never to hand when you need them, having been put in a safe place, eaten by the dog, or used to prop up an unlevel item of furniture. We therefore thought it might be a good idea to put our guidebook on line under these alphabetical headings.
You may also download the 2008/9 handbook in pdf form (547K).
Introduction, by The Rector
A very warm welcome to those of you who are new to the Edinburgh Academy. On behalf of all at the Academy we wish you a happy, rewarding and enjoyable life at school in the years ahead. The purpose of this FAQS page is to offer parents and pupils, whether new or not, a brief reference guide to school life at the Academy. It does not, of course, attempt to replace our most important source of information for pupils; namely teachers, ephors and mentors, or classmates. If you are in doubt, especially if you are new, please ask; you will swiftly get help or explanation. We try hard in all aspects of the routines and rules of the school to keep alive our underlying philosophy of dealing with individuals. However, as you would expect, in order for the school to run smoothly we must organise routines and ask that all pupils understand their responsibilities not only to themselves but also to others. Commitment and a willingness to participate are key features of Academy pupils. We hope to see these expressed consistently in all aspects of life, whether in the classroom, in activities, on the sports field, in the music room, or in the drama studio. We wish to encourage each pupil to take every opportunity that is available to him or her while they are at the School. There will be many. A willingness to get involved, to show commitment and to celebrate the success of others while contributing to school life at any level: these are the common aspects of a happy and rewarding time at the Academy. We are proud that good behaviour is also a highly prized feature of life at the Academy; it is something that we expect of all our pupils. Where standards of behaviour fall below what we commonly expect, our discipline policy is designed to guide our response. We have a very strong belief in our partnership with parents, and I am grateful to all parents for their support in maintaining the high standards of personal behaviour that we expect of all our pupils. For our part the School will always aim to follow policy statements with the principles of natural justice firmly in mind. I would like to encourage all pupils and parents of the school always to feel welcome to raise questions or make suggestions about School life and routines. Please feel confident to come and speak with us if there is any issue or need that you would like to raise. In particular, my door is always open if you wish to discuss any matter with me. I look forward to meeting you at school, and hope that you will have a very rewarding time at the Academy. With best wishes |
