Physics GCSE at The Edinburgh Academysmall logo

Maxwell Centre

A source of insight

Physics is one of the key foundation courses for any young person who is interested in the workings of the physical world around us.

The Physics course gives insight into principles which are then developed with their social applications, environmental issues and economic consequences in mind.

This is an exciting course which aims to instil a sense of awareness and inquisitiveness in all who enrol.

GCSE Physics

For GCSE Physics we use the new Edexcel "360Science" integrated suite of GCSE qualifications. The Physics course uses a variety of measurements to make sense of the world around us; it is very practical in its delivery, and uses maths skills to help understand the concepts being studied. Physics forms a natural bridge between pure Science and Engineering and as such it is a vital subject for anyone considering a Scientific or Engineering career. A pass at GCSE level is required to study this subject to Higher/A-level.

SCIENCE GCSE

In recent years the pattern of science provision at GCSE at the Academy has required that all pupils take either two or three of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This choice of subjects continues to be available. Most pupils will take either two or three science subjects as before. However, it is now possible to follow a two-year GCSE Science course. This course is specifically tailored for those who might find studying two separate science subjects over-demanding.

Science GCSE

science GCSEFor GCSE Science we use the new Edexcel "360Science" integrated suite of GCSE qualifications. Material from all three science subjects is included in this course, but both the scope and the demand of the course are limited. Pupils who take this course will be able to do so only after consultation with the Director of Studies and the Science department heads. The course will aim to show how the science studied is relevant to everyday life. Students studying this course should be able to show that they have developed the ability, for example, to make their own judgements about topical science-based stories that appear in the media.

The assessment pattern is similar to that for the single science subjects, but only the B1, C1 and P1 parts of the separate science subjects will be examined.

Progression

It is not possible to study any of the sciences beyond GCSE having followed this course.
