The servant of two masters

Challenging

Drama GCSE is an exciting, challenging and creative course. It includes the opportunity to devise and act in dramatic presentations; study drama texts; attend theatre productions; learn effective speaking and listening and presentation skills; and grow in confidence and self-awareness.

The Course

The AQA Drama course encourages pupils to develop skills of creativity, self-confidence, concentration, self-discipline and communication. It increases self and group awareness and the ability to appreciate and evaluate the work of others. Drama is an integral part of a balanced curriculum and is an excellent tool for developing a creative response to many subjects

What does the GCSE drama involve?

Research

dramaOne of the key strengths of the AQA course is the Devised Drama presentation which encourages research and use of all areas of the media and the arts, including television, film, newspapers, plays, novels, poetry, radio and art.

Plays

dramaThrough an understanding and response to a wide range of play texts, pupils gain an appreciation of the ways in which playwrights achieve their effects, and the ability to communicate the authors‘ intentions to an audience.

Assessment

dramaPupils are assessed by Coursework (60%) and a written Paper (40%).

The written paper is based on the study of a set play and response to a live production.

Coursework offers many creative possibilities:

  • Devised thematic work
  • Acting
  • Improvisation
  • Theatre in education
  • Design — Set, Costumes, Make-up
  • Masks, Props, Puppets
  • Lighting, Sound, Stage Management

On to Higher

Princess IdaThis is an excellent and exciting course in which students work on their own scripts and productions, including acting and directing.

There is the opportunity to study a major play in detail and examine the Scottish Contemporary Theatre scene. The course also includes trips to Edinburgh's many theatres, which attract visits by the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. There are also workshops sessions by expert practitioners.
