Paul S Bertolotto
I joined the Edinburgh Academy in 2004, having previously taught in Edinburgh’s state sector.
Prior to beginning my teacher training I worked as a computer systems analyst for a large financial company. It was from here that my enthusiasm and passion for the use of ICT was first ignited.
I undertook my teacher training at Edinburgh University where I remain very proud of acquiring a first class honours degree.
Throughout my time at the Academy I have benefited from the opportunity to gain from various challenges. In 2006 I became the ICT coordinator and quickly facilitated the use of Interactive Whiteboards and cross-curricular ICT teaching within every school classroom.
Also in 2006, I was fortunate enough to have an Educational Doctoral research proposal accepted by Edinburgh University. I have always felt passionate about the need to inform my own teaching practice with up to date theoretical research and felt this was an appropriate vehicle in which to further develop my understanding and contribution to educational research.
The challenge of make learning contextual, enjoyable and inspiring continues to make my role at the Academy a dynamic and fascinating one. I am a passionate believer in offering children a learning experience which represents and informs the lives they lead. In line with this I was honoured to be asked to present at the World Storyline Conference in Glasgow, an event attended by thousands of teachers from all over the world.
In 2007 I was offered a seconded post as a University lecturer and educational researcher at Edinburgh University. This role offered me the opportunity to support future teachers in their studies and to further develop my own understanding of the vast array of educational research.
Upon my return to the Academy in 2008 I was appointed as Curriculum Coordinator. A role in which I utilised much of my theoretical understanding in order to inform and develop approaches we adopted towards the new Scottish Curriculum For Excellence.
I am currently approaching the end of my Chartered Teacher studies and hope to be awarded the Chartered Teacher status within the next few months. In presenting this status the Scottish General Teaching Council will recognise me as an enhanced teaching practitioner. I look forward to utilising much of the work undertaken within these studies to inform and develop future teaching approaches and methodology.
In 2009 I was appointed as the Head of the Upper Primary. Within this role I have assumed managerial responsibility for the Primary 5 and Primary 6 year groups. I am hugely fortunate to be working with such inspirational and dedicated professionals and very much look forward to the exciting challenges which lie ahead.
