EAPFA advice for parents - travelling to school
TransportThe School Rules apply at the Academy, on the way to or from the Academy and at all events or expeditions connected with the Academy. The school can take no responsibility for pupils who arrive before our Early Birds Club starts at 8.00 am. Pupils are expected to arrive at School on foot, by bicycle, by public transport or by private car. Pupils must not drive cars to School themselves without special permission from the Rector, nor come by motor-cycle. No one may offer a lift to another Academy pupil unless both have first received separate written permission from the Rector. Such permission will be recorded on a school "driving licence". No one may be driven in a car by anyone other than a responsible adult to or from School or on any school occasion unless parents have requested and received written permission from the Rector. No one may ride pillion on a motor cycle to or from School or on any school occasion. |
Bad weather and emergenciesDuring periods of blizzard etc, when public transport is affected, we operate a contact service to arrange accommodation with parents in Edinburgh for those otherwise unable to travel to and from School. Parents should contact the Rector's Secretary for details. We shall also be posting emergency notices on our RSS feed . Parents are encouraged to install an RSS reader (obtainable free) on their home or work PC in order to be able to receive these notices. An RSS feed downloads directly to your PC desktop without your having to log on to the school website. You can set your RSS reader to look for updates at regular intervals (say every ten minutes) as long as your PC is connected to the internet, which for broadband users can be all the time. You can also set your RSS reader to alert you to the arrival of a new notice. It is suggested that this precaution may be especially appropriate when bad weather is forecast. |
Some guidance
BicyclesPupils are advised to wear cycling helmets and reflective clothing. At school bicycles should be left in the shed adjacent to the School Office. Cycles should be padlocked to the centre bars of the sheds. A chain is passed through the frames by the Janitor, from 8.45 am to 3.05 pm. Bicycles should not be ridden in the School grounds or playing fields, and should not be left at School overnight or at weekends. At the games fields cycles should be padlocked. It is emphasised that bicycles should be insured against theft, and should be identifiable, as per Police regulations. |
Bus ServicesThe Safer Routes to School initiative aims to improve the safety of children coming to and from school whether they come by foot, bicycle, public transport or car. Child safety underpins the initiative - it should be as safe as possible for children to get to school. The Safer Routes to School Groups at the Edinburgh Academy and St George‘s School have launched a joint bus service bringing pupils in to both schools. This project has removed at least 120 cars and probably more from peak time traffic. The Directors recognised the worth of the project and agreed to subsidise new routes until they could be self-funding. However the bulk of the credit for this success is due to the willingness of parents to take on the initial administrative burden; those who undertook this deserve our thanks and congratulations. |

Coaches are operated by Charlie Irons. Places must be reserved for both routes beforehand, for a minimum of a term. A term's notice of withdrawal is required. |
