Support for Parents
The Edinburgh Academy Association of Parents and Friends acts as a focal point for the Academy community, and was set up with the intention of facilitating communication between and among the school, the parents, and the pupils; of fund-raising for the school; and of channelling generally the energy and enthusiasm of the parent body to the benefit of the school.
Social events
A number of social events for parents are organised by the committee each year, and in the summer term the Big Picnic, held on the same day as the Senior School Sports, celebrates the end of the school year with a fund-raising fair with stalls, games, entertainers and a barbecue. Funds raised at the Big Picnic in the past have been used to pay for a computerised library system for the Senior School, new stage lighting and a multi–media projector for the Junior School, and new cricket nets.
Class representatives
In recent years a parents’ representative system has also been set up, with each class (or at least most classes) having a rep. The duties of the reps are to try to arrange at least one social evening for the parents of pupils in their class, and to assist in some of the events arranged by the committee, in particular those arranged for each year group in the Junior School. The committee also aims to arrange a meeting between the parents’ representatives, the Rector and the Head of the Junior School each term so that issues of concern can be raised and discussed openly.
Meetings
All are welcome to attend meetings, and anyone who wishes to stand to join the committee, or who wishes to become a class representative, should contact the current Chairperson, Victoria Craig. The 2008 AGM of the Parents Associaton will take place on Wednesday 10th September at 7pm in the Senior School Main Hall, Henderson Row.
Uniform Exchange
Parents also run a uniform exchange for the sale of good quality second-hand school uniforms. The exchange contributes towards a fund that is used to purchase extra items of eqipment throughout the school. Suggestions for its allocation are welcome, and should be addressed to:

Events 2008
Big PicnicA huge thank you to all the parents and pupils who got involved, who volunteered or who were bullied into helping, and to all those who helped beforehand by baking, spring cleaning, filling jam jars, putting up bunting and gazebos etc; and to Brodies and Campbells Prime Meat for donating the coffee and meat respectively. Special thanks to John Light and Andrew Dickenson for agreeing to be soaked, to the Accies who helped out, and as usual to Ronnie Paxton who worked his socks off. We do not have final figures yet but gross income is in the region of £8000 which is fantastic. Leavers’ Parents PartyThe parents of the 7ths leavers had an excellent party on Saturday while their offspring were having their own celebration at the Leavers’ Ball. Nearly £300 was raised which will go to leavers’ issues and other school Bursary funds. Many thanks to all who contributed to the success of the evening, especially the Leiper family for providing such an ideal venue. Gerard & Fiona Paton Rector's RetirementFor those of you who did not receive my letter, to mark the Rector's retirement the Parents’ Association will not for once be holding a champagne reception or organising a collection for a gift. Instead at our suggestion, and with his specific approval, those of you who wish to mark your appreciation of his dedication and contribution to the school over the last decade and more, are invited to make a donation to the Bursary Fund, a cause close to the Rector's heart (and one to which he has been contributing personally for the last ten years). To start the ball rolling the Parents’ Association will be donating £250. If you wish to make a donation please send it to the Senior or Junior School office in an envelope clearly marked for the attention of the Parents Association. All cheques should be made payable to the Edinburgh Academy Foundation. Parents Association Class Reps Wanted! The intention has always been that every class in the school (Junior and Senior) should have a class parents’ representative, whose role can be as big or as small as he/she would like! The preference is that they organise at the very least a social event of some kind for parents in their class so that they can try to get to know each other (this can make life a great deal easier for parents pupils and staff). In addition there are usually meetings in the autumn and summer term with the Rector of the Senior School and Headteacher of the Junior School to discuss issues that have been raised by the parent body. Reps are also asked to become involved in some of the social and fundraising initiatives which the committee organise, e.g. Big Christmas and Big Picnic, and to act generally as a conduit of information between the parents and the school. It's a great way to get to know people and the school a bit better. We would very much like more reps in the Senior School, especially in these days of coeducation, and when there are a large number of new parents - please help! If you want more information and /or would like to become or have agreed to become a rep in either of Junior or Senior Schools please contact Jane Bredin, tel 07984 815651 or janebredin@btinternet.com |
Parents Association AGM - Seminar on Internet Safety10th September 2008 7pm in the Main Hall, Henderson Row All are very welcome especially those parents new to the school. The formal business of the AGM will be (very!) brief, and after an interlude for wine and nibbles will be immediately followed, at around 7.30pm by a seminar on Internet Safety, highly recommended for parents of pupils of all ages, junior and senior, girls and boys. It will be presented by Anne Darling who is Development Officer: Child Protection for the City of Edinburgh. She was involved in the development of the Keeping Myself Safe programme and is very knowledgeable generally on matters of internet safety. If you would like to come to the AGM and/or seminar please email parentsassoc@edinburghacademy.org.uk or phone Tory Craig 07745 130987. Academy BallFriday 7th November The Assembly Rooms, George Street This is a biannual event open to all parents and staff from both the Junior and Senior School and it would be great to see lots of new faces coming along. The Ball begins with a Champagne Reception followed by 3-course meal and then dancing, both ceilidh and rock and roll! There is also fundraising fun during the evening as well as a casino. This is a very popular event and sells out quickly, so to avoid disappointment please talk to friends and organise a table of 10. To reserve a table contact Sally Spilsbury on sallyspils@btinternet.com or call her on (0131) 552 4942. Tickets cost £70 per person and a non-refundable deposit of £100 is required per table. All profits go to projects within the school. I do hope many of you will come along. The Ball Committee would welcome sponsorship from interested parties, for instance sponsorship of the champagne reception, printing and flowers. We would also be grateful for offers of prizes for the banknote draw. To discuss corporate sponsorship further please contact Clare Graham, Chair of Ball Committee at or telephone 0131 476 4241. BIG CHRISTMAS 2008Friday 14th November (Champagne preview) and Saturday 15th November Following last year's first attempt when we raised £6500 for the school and £400 for the Sick Kids, we are going to do it again! On Friday evening we will again hold an adult only (sounds a bit racy but only over 18s because of the alcohol!) champagne preview! The perfect opportunity to meet up with friends whether involved with the Academy or not, have a glass of fizz and start or finish your Christmas shopping in style. Some of the same great stalls as last year and some new ones. Saturday's event is open to all ages, with the same stalls, and some more child friendly ones, some entertainment and of course this year's mystery Santa in the grotto! Please put the dates in your diary - tickets for Friday evening available shortly! For further info contact Jane Bredin or Tory Craig. |
