The next generation of sports stars

At the Edinburgh Academy we nurture young talent. Every year, in addition to its existing scholarship programme, The Edinburgh Academy is delighted to offer a number of school sports scholarships to help children achieve their highest potential. A school sports scholarship will be available in each year group from 10 to 17 years of age.

Academy school sports scholarships are designed to reward excellence by enabling pupils to attend the Academy who would not otherwise be able to do so.

Sports scholarship outline

In appropriate cases up to 100% of tuition fees may be covered by the scholarships. In addition to a basic scholarship of up to 25% of the tuition fees, additional bursaries are available where parental means would otherwise be insufficient to meet the balance of the fees.

The main sports of The Edinburgh Academy are rugby, cricket, athletics, hockey and sailing. Additionally, enquiries will be considered in skiing, squash, tennis, golf, fencing, badminton and basketball. Ability in a second sport may also be considered in support of an application for a sports scholarship.

The Academy will do everything in its power to help sports scholars to develop their talents and achieve high levels of success. Coaching in major sports at The Academy is of a very high standard. Over the years a great many Academy pupils have gone on to represent their country at senior level.

School sports scholarship application and awards procedures

Successful candidates for school sports scholarships are likely to have reached, or have the potential to reach, at least district level in their chosen sport. They will be able to contribute fully to the sporting life of the school in at least two out of three terms annually. They will compete for the school and not for their club or other representative side when required by the Director of Sport. They will be an excellent role model for other pupils with their sportsmanship and sense of fair play.

All UK candidates for sports scholarships will be interviewed by members of the PE department. Overseas candidates for sports scholarships will be required to submit written evidence supported by testimonials. Candidates for sports scholarships are expected to show that they are familiar with current issues of concern regarding sport in general and their own sports in particular. They should be completely familiar with rules, tactics and training regimes of their own sports.

In addition, candidates for school sports scholarships will be required to sit the appropriate academic examination papers for their age group. These examinations take place in February.

Scholarship applications for 2008-9 have closed. Applications for 2009-10 are due by 12 January 2009.
