Academic School Scholarships
for entry to the Junior School
(Primary 1 upwards, 4.5 to 10.6 years old on entry).
School scholarships are not normally available in the Edinburgh Academy Junior School but may be awarded in exceptional circumstances. Interested parents of children who would be candidates for Primary 5 or 6 entry are invited to contact the Headteacher about the possibility of school scholarships Academic School Scholarships
for entry to the Thirds Classes
(Secondary 2, 12.6 to 13.5 years old on entry) School scholarships at this age are also open to internal candidates. Candidates for school scholarships will sit papers in English (90 minutes), maths (75 minutes), science (60 minutes and French (60 minutes). Candidates for school scholarships are expected to show excellence in at least three subjects. Candidates for art scholarships, music scholarships or sports scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates, and in addition will be required to demonstrate their abilities in their chosen field. The examination will be held in early February 2009. Specimen papers are unfortunately not available. |
Academic School Scholarships
for entry to Senior years 1 & 2
(Primary 7 and Senior 1, 10.6 to 12.5 years old on entry).
Candidates for school scholarships will sit papers in English (90 minutes) and maths (75 minutes). Candidates for art scholarships, music scholarships or sports scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates, and in addition will be required to demonstrate their abilities in their chosen field.
The examination will be held in early February 2009. Specimen papers are unfortunately not available.
Academic School Scholarships for entry to the Fourths and Fifths Classes
(Secondary 3 and Secondary 4, 13.6 to 15.5 years old on entry) Additional scholarships may also be available to pupils wishing
to join the Academy for their GCSE courses. Assessment
arrangements are the same as for the Thirds classes.
The examination will be held in early February 2009. Specimen papers are unfortunately not available. |
Academic School Scholarships for entry to the Sixth Form
(Secondary 5, 15.6+ years old on entry)
School scholarship awards are made following interview and examination or audition, and taking into account the school report. Candidates for school scholarships are expected to sit papers in three or four subjects of their own choosing. The best three performances will count towards the final result. The school scholarship papers are designed to select candidates of high academic potential. Candidates for art scholarships, music scholarships or sports scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates, and in addition will be required to demonstrate their abilities in their chosen field. Specimen papers are unfortunately not available. |
ART
One of the scholarships in the Geits, Seconds, or Thirds may be offered for art. There is no art examination paper, but interviews will be held and the candidates should bring a portfolio. Candidates for art scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates in addition to demonstrating their abilities in their chosen field.
The Duncan Pettigrew Art Scholarship is offered to a boy or girl in the final year at preparatory school or primary school. Art scholarship candidates will have an interview with portfolio in February.
The Cheverton Art Scholarship is open to candidates for entry to the Sixth Form (Senior 5). Candidates for this art scholarship will also sit entrance papers in two subjects at the time of the Sixth Form Scholarship Examination. Art scholarship candidates will have an interview and assessment of their portfolio at that time.

MUSIC
One or more A L F Smith Music Scholarships may be awarded to candidates of sufficient promise, on the same basis as academic and art candidates. There is no music scholarship written examination; candidates for music scholarships will be assessed on interview, report and audition. Music scholarship holders receive free tuition with school staff in two instruments, in addition to the fee remission. Candidates for music scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates in addition to demonstrating their abilities in their chosen field.
SPORT
The sports scholarships are intended for outstanding performers in a variety of sporting fields. The school is looking for the next generation to gain representative honours and follow in the footsteps of Academy pupils Michael Blair (rugby), Stuart Moffat (cricket and rugby), Georgina Usher (fencing) and countless others. One scholarship is available in each secondary age group. Candidates for sports scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates in addition to demonstrating their abilities in their chosen field.
