Admissions, Fees and Financial Help
Enquiries & ApplicationsThis section of the website gives details of admissions procedures, bursaries, scholarships and fees for all age groups from the Little Nursery (age 2) to the sixth form (age 16 plus). There is also an on line admissions & bursary / scholarship form which allows you to make the initial application arrangements easily. This is compatible with most browsers. If by chance you should encounter any difficulty, please use one of the alternative contacts listed at the foot of this page. |
Financial help with fees is availableEvery year The Edinburgh Academy offers financial support to help able children achieve their highest potential. Bursaries (financial support) of up to 100% of school fees, dependent on parental means, are available to appropriate pupils whose families may not otherwise be in a position to consider the school. Bursary applications for 2010-11 are due by January 13th 2010. Academic scholarships, art scholarships, music scholarships and sports scholarships are also available. Scholarship applications for 2010-11 are due by 13th January 2010. |
Entry and Assessment: (early registration is strongly recommended)
Nursery (age 2-5) |
Junior School (age 5-10) |
||
|
Parents are encouraged to visit the Nursery, to see it in action and meet the Nursery head and staff. Applications to start in the nursery can be made at any time prior to your child’s third birthday. Applications to transfer to the nursery are handled on an ad hoc basis. Nursery places are formally offered in November for the following school year beginning in August. |
Applicants are asked to complete basic tests to ensure that the school is appropriate for their needs. Each January The Edinburgh Academy offers assessments for children for entry into Primary 1 the following year; although throughout the year the Junior School conducts admissions for Primary 2 to Primary 6. Assessments for children who are candidates for entry into Primary 1 will be held on Saturday 9th and Saturday 16th January 2010. Tests for entry into other year groups can be arranged at times to suit parents. A report will be requested from the child's current school for candidates for Primary 2-6. |

Geits (Primary 7, ages 10.6 - 11.5) |
Seconds (S1, ages 11.6 - 12.5) |
||
|
Joining the Geits (Primary 7) is perhaps the simplest social transition. All children are new to the Senior School together and new friendships are quickly established. Any child from a Scottish primary school who is at or beyond level C on the 5-14 assessment scheme will find no particular difficulty in settling in to the work (Level 4 on the English National Curriculum). Candidates will be asked to sit entrance papers in English (90 minutes) and maths (75 minutes). Entrance exams Saturday 30th January 2010. |
Joining the Seconds is also a common option (i.e. transferring at the end of Primary 7) and we are keen to encourage more boys to do this. Any boy or girl from a Scottish primary school who is at or beyond level D will find no particular difficulty in settling in to the work (Level 5 on the English National Curriculum). Candidates will be asked to sit entrance papers in English (90 minutes) and maths (75 minutes). Entrance exams Saturday 30th January 2010. |
||
Thirds (S2, ages 12.6 - 13.5) |
Fourths or Fifths (S3 or S4, ages 13.6 - 15.5) |
||
|
The obvious time for a boy or girl at a 8-13 Prep School to join us is in the Thirds, and the Academy curriculum sits neatly onto the Common Entrance Curriculum. Candidates will be asked to sit entrance papers in English (90 minutes) and maths (75 minutes) but may offer the Common Entrance Exam as an alternative. Entrance exams Saturday 30th January 2010. |
For entry to the Fourths or Fifths (S3 or S4) classes, appropriate tests will be set, and the previous school’s recommendation on GCSE course choices will be closely noted. Entrance exams Saturday 30th January 2010. |

Sixth Form (s5 or s6, age 15.6+) |
Financial Help with Fees |
||
We traditionally have a significant number of new pupils, both boys and girls, joining us to complete their sixth form education at the Academy. For entry to the Sixth and Seventh classes (S5-S6), there is no examination. The report from the previous school, actual or predicted examination results and interview are the key elements of entry to the upper years. We would normally expect pupils moving into our Sixth Form to have at least 5 good GCSE or Standard Grade results. |
Have you considered whether your son or daughter may be eligible for a scholarship or for other financial assistance? The Edinburgh Academy Senior School offers a number of scholarships, academic, artistic, musical and sporting. Bursaries are also available to assist those who would otherwise not be able to attend the school. Please follow the links at the top of the right hand column. |
