School Art Scholarships

The next generation of artists

At the Edinburgh Academy we nurture young talent. Edinburgh Academy school art scholarships are designed to reward excellence. Every year The Edinburgh Academy is delighted to offer two school art scholarships to help children achieve their highest potential.

The Duncan Pettigrew Art Scholarship (S3) is offered to a boy or a girl joining the 4ths.

The Cheverton Art Scholarship (S5) is open to candidates for entry to the 6ths.

Candidates for school art scholarships will be interviewed by members of the art department and present their portfolio in the Spring Term. Overseas candidates for school art scholarships will be required to submit a portfolio supported by testimonials. Candidates for school art scholarships are expected to show that they are familiar with current developments regarding art in general and their own art in particular. There is also a practical assessment element.

School Art Scholarship Awards are made on the same basis as Academic Scholarships. External candidates for school art scholarships must also sit the Entrance Examination. These examinations take place in February.

Expert Tuition

The Academy will do everything in its power to help art scholars to develop their talents and achieve high levels of success. Art tuition at The Academy is of a very high standard.

Famous Artists who are Alumni

Over the years a great many Academy pupils have gone on to professional success. The famous colourist "Bunty" Cadell was a nineteenth century pupil. Craigie Aitchison, Denis Peploe, Donald Watson and Gordon Bryce are artists who earned distinction in the twentieth century, whilst recent leavers include Gordon Anderson and Jamie Primrose. Amount of Award

School art scholarship awards are made primarily with the purpose of promoting and recognising high achievement.

Awards can be supplemented by bursaries to the value of full school fees subject to proven financial need and the terms of our Bursaries Scheme. In appropriate cases up to 100% of tuition fees may be covered where parental means would otherwise be insufficient to meet the fees.

Closing date for school art scholarship applications is

Wednesday 13th January 2010.

Art Assessments must be complete by

Friday 5th February 2010.

The Duncan Pettigrew School Art Scholarship is offered to a boy or a girl joining the 4ths (S3)

Candidates for school art scholarships are expected to show excellence in art. By excellence we mean surpassing what is expected of your age group.

This school art scholarship honours Duncan Pettigrew, a pupil of exceptional artistic ability who sadly died of leukaemia at the age of only 19. Candidates for school art scholarships will sit the same papers as academic scholarship candidates in addition to demonstrating their abilities in their chosen field.

The Duncan Pettigrew Art Scholarship is awarded to pupils of a high standard in art who want to develop their skills in an artistic environment that will really bring out the very best in their ability. As with the senior school art scholarship, selection for the Duncan Pettigrew Art Scholarship will involve a drawing test and interview, with examples of work done by the pupil (a portfolio) to be brought with them to the interview.

The examination and interview for the Duncan Pettigrew Art Scholarship take place in February each year.

Edinburgh Academy Junior School art scholarships

The Cheverton Art Scholarship (S5) is open to a boy or a girl candidate for entry to the 6ths (S5).

At this level applicants for school art scholarships may be specialised in a single discipline. Candidates will be required to demonstrate their abilities. Candidates for school art scholarships should bring their portfolio.

Cheverton Art Scholarships are named after a late, inspirational head of art, who set high standards and earned the department a reputation for excellence in art and design. He and his wife went on to be founders of the Leith School of Art before their untimely death.

This school art scholarship is awarded to pupils who have reached a high standard at GCSE or Standard Grade Art and who really want to stretch their abilities in art to a higher level through working in a strong artistic environment with exceptional standards and inspirational teaching.

Cheverton Art Scholarship candidates will also sit entrance papers in two subjects at the time of the Sixth Form Scholarship Examination. . The examination and interview for this school art scholarship take place in February each year.


 

Please note that all Scholarships Awards made by the School are discretionary and subject to annual review. If candidates do not show continued application, interest and benefit arising from their award category the benefit may be withdrawn.
