Art
Art is a particular strength of the curriculum and the life of the Academy.
A large amount of pupils take the subject up to A level and the success rate for continuing on to Art College is very high. A number of students every year join The Academy with their primary objective being the opportunity to study fine art with our inspirational staff. Examples of work by students are to be found everywhere around the grounds, corridors and public rooms. There is a major exhibition at the end of the year with a guest speaker and where pupils often sell their work! The work is ambitious, varied and personal. It is often commented that they are reaching an art college standard while at school.
Thematic approach
Every year the department comes up with a new theme. This allows for a fresh approach to the subject by both pupils and staff and helps in developing original and exciting ideas. All year groups approach the theme in a variety of ways, while also being influenced by other year group’s projects. Themes have included in recent years: “Soundscapes”, “Utopia”, “Intimate Immensity” and “The boundary between Substance and Appearance”
Scholarships
There are two art scholarships awarded each year, one for entry at sixth year and one for entry to the geits. The report from the previous school, actual or predicted examination results, an interview and portfolio are the key elements of entry.
Staff
There are three full-time art teachers and one part time teacher who is also the school graphic designer. There is a full time technician as well as an annual artist in residence. Activities are supported by a part time potter and a photographer. All the staff bring a wide range of expertise to the school and have strong links with the art and design world, exhibiting their own work, inviting guests into the school and visiting studios and galleries.
Facilities
The department has specialist facilities for printmaking including relief, etching and photo-silkscreen equipment. Pottery and ceramic facilities are excellent with two kilns and 5 wheels. There is a darkroom with several enlargers. In addition we have a resource/lecture room with slide and digital projection facilities where pupils can also go for reference books. There is a computer room with a mixture of Apples and PC’s, these are used for animation, film and photoshop as well as for research.
A-Level Students
A Level students have their own dedicated studio space and are encouraged to develop their own personal styles in a variety of different mediums. We have had excellent results for many years and a large proportion go on to study the subject at university level.
Life Drawing
Life drawing classes are run on two evenings of the week with pupils from other schools and adults joining in as well.
Art Expeditions
Trips both abroad and within the UK are an important part of the character of this department. These have included New York, Washington, Barcelona, Paris, London, Skye, Eigg and Rhum in recent years as well as making god use of the school outdoor centre.
Art Activities
There are activities in pottery and photography provided by specialist teachers for the junior pupils. There are also various other activities provided by staff which include sculpture, printmaking, sculpture and animation. Workshops in other areas are frequently organised.
